After recovering from the final stage of blood cancer in 2009, Joy completed her doctoral studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in 2011 and founded the not-for-profit corporation Just Compassion, which provides medical and dental care via mobile units to under-served populations of the general public (especially children) at no cost to the patients. Combining her eleven years of experience as a Certified Public Accountant with her twelve years as an ordained minister, Dr. Heaton now utilizes her business savvy with her pastoral heart to coordinate mobile units to provide medical and dental care to children in rural parts of Appalachian Virginia and West Virginia, where she was born. She is truly doing what she loves and meeting real needs that no others are addressing.
