I am revolutionizing grief and bereavement care in America. I am the founder and executive director of Evermore, a national, nonpartisan nonprofit making the world a more livable place for all bereaved people. Evermore is a "field catalyst," which is rare because new fields of study or work do not emerge often; they do so when the social or environmental conditions demand them (e.g., climate change efforts in the 1970s).Bereavement — the death of someone meaningful in our lives — is increasingly a direct concern for millions in America and throughout the world, making the need for an organized, coordinated, and evidence-based approach both urgent and necessary. Bereaved people face an array of hardships that pervade every aspect of their lives, creating formidable and, in some cases, insurmountable obstacles to their long-term health, economic security, and social stability. Bereavement is associated with academic failings, substance misuse, teen pregnancy, incarceration, suicide attempts, suicide, and premature death, among other poor outcomes. Evermore is leading America’s social movement to reform our systems to serve all bereaved people. We are a movement from the people — and by the people — and we have achieved astonishing success in recent years.In January 2020 (pre-COVID), I went to the House and Senate health appropriations committees with concerns that bereavement was a significant public concern hiding in plain sight. In FY21, we secured bereavement provisions in the U.S. budget process for the first time. We have secured three consecutive appropriation provisions via the US budget process. The U.S. government issued its first report on grief and bereavement due to our advocacy, with more in the pipeline. In addition, the first federal meeting on grief and bereavement has taken place because of our efforts. Today, we are advancing the issue across multiple federal agencies, including ASPE, AHRQ, HRSA, ED, FTC, CDC, and more and more. In addition, I led the coalition that secured paid bereavement leave as part of Back Back Better; it was the first time paid bereavement leave entered the national policy dialogue — and we have supported efforts so that our Armed Forces can return home for the death of a child or spouse. Federal workers also receive this benefit, but not everyday Americans. Evermore is building the bereavement support systems and policies you want and when you need them most.
