I formed the first after school program for Hispanic students in 5th Ward in 1969 in addition to my teaching duties. The "Charm Club", was organized to help keep children from joining gangs. We wrote grants and was awarded funds that allowed us to teach over 15 arts and craft, as well as sewing, tap dancing, folkloric dancing, career awareness, and self esteem. One of the goals for forming the organization was to show children if they work hard in school they can and, will become successful adults. Some years later, I had the honor of selling a home to a former Charmette, who did something her parents could not do and that was to break the cycle of living in poverty.I receive 100% support from the late school board members Mr. Ernest McGowan, and Mrs. Hazel Bracken for the Charm Club program as well as Dr. Joe Angel .My fondest memory working as an inner city school counselor was at MacGregor Magnet School, under the leadership of the late Dr. Larry J. Alexander, who fully understood what the role of a counselor was, which allowed me to work 100% with students daily in their classrooms as well, and one-on-one consultation. In 1998, I was asked to join Mr. Carlos Pomares, principle of a middle school to be on his counseling team as his lead counselor.I am happy to say, that I have met so many of my students who want to give me credit for their new found success. All I wanted to see was for them to get on the tax roll, and make a contribution to our society.
