About Joyce Thompson, Phd

I am currently investigating the role of Bmi1, a central protein in an epigenetic complex (Polycomb repressor complex 1), in the pathogenesis of pancreatic neoplasia. The Bednar lab focuses on the epigenetic mechanisms that facilitate the initiation and progression of pancreatic neoplasia upon activation of oncogenic Kras. By looking at the transcription factor networks that are altered during injury and repair of the pancreas in the presence and absence of oncogenic Kras, we hope to tease apart the epigenetic changes that commit a cell to a neoplastic fate and harness this knowledge for the development of new chemotherapeutic targets.
