About Joyce Burger
I am a disciplined, responsible and enthusiastic person with a strong background in molecular genetics and vascular biology. After finishing my PhD, I started as a program officer at NWO. I am involved in the Talent program (Veni) and Science domain prizes (Team Science) among others. Supporting scientists and translation of science to patients and the general public are interests of me. This translation is one of the reasons why I was involved in the organization of "Wetenschapscafé Rotterdam".

In my PhD project I focused on the genetic causes of aortic aneurysms. This involved investigating the molecular mechanisms that are involved in the development of aortic aneurysms, identification of new gene mutation and functional characterization of candidate genes.Learning more about aortic aneurysms and how they develop is important for identication of new treatment options for patients since surgical treatment is currently the only option.Skills: cell culture, isolation of vascular smooth muscle cells, immunocytochemistry, western blotting, transdifferentiation assay, migration assay, live cell imaging, luciferase transcriptional reporter assay, analysis of mitochondrial function, proliferation assay, analysis of actin dynamics.
