Here's my story...I grew up in a middle-class home with a stay-at-home mom who was present throughout my childhood. On the surface, there was nothing traumatic about my childhood. Yet, I struggled with... 😞 low self-esteem 😞 social anxiety 😞 feeling not good enough For the most part, I learned to cope with it and accepted that this was just who I was and how life was going to be for me. That was until I learned about trauma. 1️⃣ Trauma affects our beliefs about ourselves and the world. Most of our beliefs about ourselves, e.g. "I am not enough", or "I am unworthy", originated from our childhood.2️⃣ What we often think of as personality traits can be adaptations from trauma. As children, we learned to adapt our personalities to our caregivers' expectations to gain their love and acceptance. As a result, we gradually lose our true selves and become who our caregivers wanted us to be. This is...> the high-achiever workaholic who can't rest because she only received love when she worked hard and achieved good grades in school> the shy introvert who can't speak up even when she needs to because she had a critical parent who would criticise her for saying the wrong thing> the perfectionist who can't make a single mistake because she was punished for making the slightest mistake3️⃣ Our triggers are rooted in trauma and have little to do with what's happening in the present moment. This is why our emotional experiences can be disproportionate to what's happening in front of us. 4️⃣ We can't cognitively think our way out of our trauma responses because trauma is stored in the body and nervous system.Learning about trauma empowered me. It made me realise there was nothing wrong with me and that I was this way because of what happened to me. Since then, I have started to make healing a priority. These days...💖 I am more confident than I've ever been💖 I speak my mind without worrying about how others would perceive me 💖 I aspire to dreams that I used to believe were out of reach for meNow, I'm on a mission to help other women do the same. You weren't born with low self-esteem and you're certainly not meant to live with it.
