2010 - 2022- Bing Ads, Microsoft Advertising - I created, grew and led the global 24/7 ad marketplace live site monitoring and live site incident management operations of the Microsoft Advertising network, a multi-billion-dollar revenue stream for Microsoft. - I led a team of 30 program managers, data scientists, software engineers and vendor analysts, working together in a 24/7 model to diligently monitor Ads revenue health and investigate/explain KPI trends. - This is a high visibility role with daily reporting to Bing Ads leadership.- I provided real-time insights using our scalable real-time analytics and monitoring infrastructure built over the years in close partnership with our data and UX engineering teams. - I influenced and guided the development of our metrics alerting platform that generates thousands of alerts on time-series metrics across various dimensions. I created a 3-tier alert response team structure that manages the response, investigation, escalation and resolution of these alerts. - I led the live site incident management operations for Microsoft Advertising. My team drove incident resolution and follow ups with detailed root cause and MTTD / MTTR analysis for every incident. - I have directly recruited, grown and mentored dozens of talented PMs and data scientists over the years.

I delivered version 1.0 of the signup platform for Microsoft's first foray into cloud-based services, then known as BPOS - Business Productivity Online Services, a couple of years before Office 365 and Azure came along. I hired and led a team of 5-7 Program Managers focused on shipping UX and backend billing and provisioning features for the signup platform in collaboration with peer dev / test teams as part of the feature crews, and business stakeholders in Microsoft's licensing orgs. This was a high visibility role with weekly CVP level reviews with focus on a seamless and user-friendly signup experience for Microsoft's first foray into cloud-based services.

I managed the billing and provisioning function of Live Meeting, where I led a team of 5-7 PMs, developers and operations analysts, that built and operated the billing and provisioning systems for Live Meeting's enterprise customers. Live Meeting was Microsoft's first enterprise online service with a completely different billing model (usage based) unlike the traditional volume license-based software solutions These usage-based billing and provisioning systems subsequently scaled to onboard other Microsoft online services, as part of the BPOS offering.

Newly hired as a rookie PM in the Live Meeting service, I got introduced to the art of Microsoft program management through a variety of projects Business Operations.

As a contract .NET developer, I developed the bill payment web site for Verizon Communications, processing $1B payments annually. This was a heads down coding position that I opted to work in after the tech crash of 2001.

I managed the offshore development operations of Cybertech, where I led a team of software and networking engineers engaged on various projects globally, from large telecom companies to small eCommerce startups. I oversaw the recruitment, training and placement of Cisco certified network engineers into various assignments globally. I managed a small team of India based software engineers that were an extension of a larger team in the US.

I led the eCommerce practice at this mid-sized IT consulting firm, with clients in startup eCommerce projects. I architected and led web developers to build mostly B2B commerce web sites, using IBM, Sun and Microsoft web server technologies like IBM Websphere, Java, and Microsoft Visual Basic and ASP.

As Systems Analyst and Senior Systems Engineer, I implemented a systems performance monitoring solution for US Cellular's billing systems, towards achieving a business goal of significantly reducing cellular service activation time for consumers. The billing systems were based on Oracle running on IBM AIX with BEA Tuxedo middleware on HP servers and PowerBuilder clients. The challenge was to continuously measure the end-to-end latency of user transactions and recommending improvement opportunities. I implemented these monitoring systems using a combination of BMC Patrol, LoadRunner / WebRunner and custom software written in Java/C/Unix.I also went to business school at Kellogg-Northwestern to earn an MBA degree during this time.

In my first job after college, I had the privilege of working at a premier R&D institution, then known as the National Center for Software Technology (NCST), in a combination of academic, research and commercial roles, and used the Internet extensively, well before the Web. My research work was in speech compression, trying to send voice real-time over really low bandwidth IP (2400 bps), using speech coding techniques like linear predictive coding (LPC). I developed a few software products using C and assembly languages for telecom providers. I also taught programming and the Computer Networking subject to master’s program students at the institute and the University of Goa as a visiting lecturer.
