My overall remit is to coordinate how the investment department identifies and manages environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities across the pension plan. I currently focus on thought leadership and innovative management tools and process around climate change in investments. In addition, my other main focus is delivering the ESG education program for our 300+ investment staff. Other current and previous duties include:Coordinating governance of responsible investing within the company;Representing Ontario Teachers' at conferences and externally with peersDeveloping processes and policies for integrating ESG considerations into investment processes; andWorking with investment teams in different asset classes to tailor the program to their work, including private equity, public equity, fixed income and real assets (infrastructure and real estate).

This position has rounded out my skill set giving me first-hand experience in developing new policy and turning that into legislation and regulations. The goal of this project is to deliver a more efficient and open environmental approvals process while safeguarding the environment. To deliver this goal, I also support the policy implementation by writing guidance documents, contributing to training, business architecture and communication deliverables; and liaising with different ministry stakeholders to ensure consistency in the policy changes.

Advisory and Project Management Services in climate change and environmental issues

This position has been a welcome challenge. I have had the opportunity to grow in my management skill set and responsibilities by establishing this department. On the technical side, I have led the technical team in managing CDM projects and supporting the investment and trading arms of the businees with risk-based analysis and development.

Consulting gave me the variety of work that was both interesting and wide-ranging. My primary technical roles were building the North American power generation model for the company, modelling carbon prices in an international market and auditing emission reduction projects nationally and internationally.

My thesis work was to study the environmental footprint and related design elements of products. I conducted field research in manufacturing centres and performed quantitative and qualitative data analysis on selected remanufactured products. I presented my research at international academic conferences and won an award for the paper. I also mentored undergraduate students and taught writing at the Engineering Communication Centre.

I worked in a team environment as the stress engineer to design, analyse and test aeroplane landing gear structures. My primary responsibility was to analyse aeroplane landing gear for strength, fatigue, and linear elastic fracture mechanics. Also provided input to the materials testing and dynamic analysis. My outputs were technical reports and drawings.
