Joy is an enthusiastic and inspirational leader who believes that the success of "US" happens one "I" at a time. At South Arts, Joy leads a team of 10 program staff and together they animate a mission of advancing Southern vitality through the arts. They do this work in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the state arts agencies of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee — with additional funding from other public and private donors such as the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Wallace Foundation. In addition to being a thought-partner with the President & CEO and staffing board committees, her responsibilities include leading the design, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of 20 unique programs and services that touch all US states, territories, and jurisdictions. Joy's prior work roles include executive director; director of administration, human resources, and operations; program director for organizational and leadership development; entrepreneurship program director; cultural tourism/community economic development; director of training and technical assistance; director of special projects. Education and specialized training in a variety of fields and subjects - Leadership and Complex Adaptive Systems; Human Resources Employee Law Relations; Racial Equity and Diversity; Mediation; Executive Transition and Succession Planning; and Risk Management - provides Joy with a multitude of frames through which to manage organizations and lead people. Her 25 years of experience are complemented by community and nonprofit board service, along with over a decade in higher education as an adjunct faculty member.As a consultant, speaker, and facilitator, Joy engages with leaders and staff of nonprofits, government agencies, and other organizations regionally, nationally, and internationally. Her success includes more than $9 million secured for grants to arts, education, and communities; $3 million micro-lending program for cultural entrepreneurs; corporate partnerships; production of learning and professional development events such as conferences, workshops, and webinars. She has contributed to the field through research and articles that highlight the role and power of arts for societal good. Joy embraces the energy of dynamic systems as fuel to catalyze change.
