João Costa, born in 1974, graduated in Medicine from Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL) in 1998. He specializes in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Clinical Pharmacology.Dr. Costa holds a Master’s in Neurosciences from FMUL, a Master’s in Neurological Electrodiagnosis from the University of Barcelona, and a Doctor of Medicine in Neurology from FMUL. He also completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with CIBERNED, under the Spanish Ministry of Health.He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at FMUL and the Director of the Medical Education Department at FMUL. Additionally, he is the Principal Investigator at the Clinical Pharmacology Unit at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and works as a Medical Doctor at Hospital da Luz in Lisbon.Dr. Costa also serves as a Board Member of the Education working group at the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, chairs the Guidelines production group at the European Academy of Neurology, and is President of the Clinical Pharmacology College at the Portuguese General Medical Council. He is a member of the National Pharmacy and Therapeutic Commission and the National Council for Drugs Policy.In his previous role as Deputy Director of the Center of Evidence-Based Medicine (FMUL) and later on as Senior Scientific Consultant for IQVIA, he worked on over 400 HEOR projects that facilitated the entry of new health technologies into the market. During his career, he worked with national and global teams on evidence generation (from real-world studies to randomised clinical trials and indirect treatment comparisons), including pharmacoeconomics, either as a research project or to support HTA dossier preparation.Dr. Costa has published over 300 full papers with peer-reviewing, with an H-index of 51 and more than 9,000 citations. His awards include the Scientific Prize of the University of Lisbon (2018) and the Bial Medicine Prize (2020). He was listed among the Top 2% of scientists in the world (2022 and 2024) by Stanford University / Elsevier.
