Jp Maree Email and Phone Number
I am a Crick Africa Network Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. As a biochemist with a strong focus on epigenetics and molecular biology, my research investigates the epigenome of Trypanosoma brucei, an early-branching eukaryote responsible for African sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana in livestock. I am particularly interested in the coordination and regulation of RNA Pol II gene transcription through epigenetic mechanisms. My work aims to design epigenetic therapies for Trypanosomal diseases, with the goal of developing early lead therapeutics that could make a tangible impact on human healthcare through translational science. My training spans micro- and molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics, genomics, epigenetics, ChIP-seq, and bioinformatics. I have hands-on expertise in high-throughput sequencing technologies, mass spectrometry, molecular biology, protocol development, experimental design, bioinformatics data analysis, as well as tutoring, lecturing, curriculum development, and supervising postgraduate research.Additionally, I served as the chair of the H3Africa Fellows Club and editor-in-chief of the H3Africa Newsletter, a co-funded initiative by the Wellcome Trust and NIH, which aims to disseminate primary research findings back to African communities.
