When turning sixteen, he started taking individual lessons in Music Composition with Klaas ten Holt in Amsterdam, whereafter he was accepted for the Bachelor studies in Classical Composition at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague, where he studied under the tutelage of Guus Janssen, Calliope Tsoupaki and Diderik Wagenaar, with a minor studies in Conducting with Alex Schillings and Jos Vermunt. (BMus 2014, MMus, 2016). During the final year of his postgraduate studies, De Graaff studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Kenneth Hesketh as part of the Erasmus Exchange programme.De Graaff composed works for a wide variety of ensembles, orchestras and soloists; including the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic (Residentie Orchestra), The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, David Kweksilber Big Band, TenToon Ensemble, Percussion The Hague, Ensemble Modelo62 and soloists including Pierre Woudenberg and Johan van der Linden.Most of his pieces are often tonally oriented, with a strong emphasis on melodic development and orchestration. Also the use of different measurements and rhythms has become a very important issue in his musical language, with influences from Jazz, Gipsy and South American music. Often his compositions are not written in a common quadruple time signature, but in a combination of different (usually fixed) meters that play around or even avoid the feeling of a ‘strong’ beat which causes his music to have a fresh twist and an elusive character, or as a musician once mentioned: 'Complex music with a distinctive bite...'Beside his activities as a composer, De Graaff is also active as conductor, arranger and (self-employed) composition tutor.
