I have been a journalist for 35 years. Currently, I am Articles Editor for RealClearInvestigations and a contributing columnist to the op-ed page of The News & Observer of Raleigh. I also teach writing at Duke University as an adjunct professor. I was the Book Review Editor & Books Columnist for the News & Observer for 13 years (1997-2009); before that, I was a member of the New York Times' Writing Program for young reporters.I have published four books and my newspaper columns have won several national awards, including the Distinguished Writing Award for Commentary from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
