Two Worlds Converged

Georgia State University Housing

Greater Atlanta Area

Working where I reside has enabled me to be apart of a community where approximately 5,200 residents come from many states throughout the U.S. as well as countries around the world. Students are of different backgrounds, ethnicities, races, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, national origins, abilities and other identities. This richness in diversity is what makes living on campus an amazing experience. Living and interacting with different types of people prepares residents within our housing community for living in our increasingly diverse and global world. This is why I was extremely excited when I received the opportunity to team up with fellow RAs to educate our residents on Caribbean culture. Because I am prideful of my Haitian heritage, I was honored to represent Haiti in our panel that consisted of RAs from all over the west Indies. Many residents throughout the fall semester were curious enough to ask many questions about different RAs' experiences and Caribbean culture as well as expressed that they too, were of Caribbean decent. In order to acknowledge the Caribbean community present within our hall, we decided that it would be best to allow representatives to speak their truths from their countries' perspective. This alone displayed both the similarities and differences between every country represented. We were fortunate enough to have representatives from French, Spanish, and English speaking countries. I was able to help plan the set up and the menu prior as well as facilitate the conversation during the event to ensure that residents who attended would leave gaining knowledge on the Caribbean. As a result, residents expressed that they both thoroughly enjoyed the program and learned from the program, and RAs met residents that were from or had ancestry from their respective countries. The relationships established that night have carried over to the present and demonstrated the power of Residential Curriculum.

Keep Calm...Part 2

Georgia State University Housing

Greater Atlanta Area

The RA position involves working and residing in the same environment. Since working where I reside can result in experiencing unpredictable situations, it is essential to have the ability to give undivided attention to professional responsibilities in the event of unanticipated emergencies. One event that allowed me to demonstrate my ability to respond to a crisis occurred during a weeknight when I wasn't on duty. I was on my way to an on campus meeting when all of the sudden one of the lobby elevators malfunctioned with residents inside. I knew I couldn't continue leaving the facility so I informed the RA at the front desk to call Georgia State University police and follow the protocol in the elevator book for an entrapment. Although the doors wouldn't open the elevator had not moved so I could communicate with the entrapped residents. I repeatedly yet calmly assured them that help was on the way and that they would be okay. I continued to speak through the closed elevator doors, until finally the elevator was able to open its doors again. In the moment, my meeting instantly became the least important event on my mind since I knew residents were entrapped. Although my job would only require me to make the necessary calls, I knew that hearing a voice claiming that everything would be okay and help was on the way would assure the panicking residents that it was known that they were entrapped and not to worry. Moments that require immediate attention as such always remind me to be aware both on and off the clock and help residents realize that RAs serve to ensure that the safety of residents is secured.

Building Community

Georgia State University Housing

Greater Atlanta Area

Advising residents concerning academic, social, and personal issues by serving as a listener and a helper is an everyday responsibility as a RA. It essential for me to become familiar with Georgia State departments and services so I am able to serve as a resource for students. One positive interaction that I distinctly remember is meeting a resident at the community desk who needed a loaner key. As RAs, we are expected to serve a minimum of 4 hours a week at the community desk in GSU apparel. While completing the paper work prior to disseminating the loaner key, the resident saw my GSU chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. shirt and asked how she could get active. I then told the resident who also happened to live on my floor that I was the direct source of information since I currently serve as the Membership Director for the eboard. I was able to provide her with information on the then upcoming organization fair that was planned to occur at the football stadium. My resident has since joined and actively served as a member of the GSU chapter of N.A.A.C.P. as well as joined other on campus organizations. I was grateful to not only direct her in the right direction regarding N.A.A.C.P., but also ecstatic to know I had a resident who too, shared similar interests in advocating for minority rights.

Keep Calm

Georgia State University Housing

Greater Atlanta Area

Demonstrating excellent personal and professional judgment is a part of my daily role here as a Resident Assistant. Everyday is another opportunity to evaluate risks. One event that allowed me to demonstrate my ability to respond to a crisis occurred during an weeknight when I wasn't on duty. A friend stopped by my room to work on an assignment and told me that a resident didn't look too well in the lobby. As I immediately started getting dressed to go downstairs from the 8th floor, my friend asked why I was leaving because she didn't think it was "that serious". After thanking her for the information and telling her I would return after evaluating the situation, I went downstairs to find the resident passed out in the middle of the doorway to enter Piedmont North B. Thankfully a coworker at the desk and the RAOD had already contacted GSU PD. I immediately instructed residents to enter and exit the building using the side door because of the situation at hand. Moments later the fire alarm went off. I knew that residents would be concerned so I made sure that everything took place as safely and quickly as possible without causing anymore commotion. I continued to regulate the exit doors while waiting for other RAs to appear so I could begin disseminating fluorescent jackets to the staff in order to regulate the flow of traffic leaving the building during all of the confusion. There weren't many questions asked during throughout this entire episode of events, but everyone on staff found an assignment to carry out. I greatly appreciated the cooperation and teamwork displayed that night. Following my gut feeling forced me to evaluate the scene in the lobby, and as a result of taking the appropriate actions taught during training (regulating the flow of traffic and making sure that residents were calm and exiting quickly) residents were able to exit safely and the injured resident was able to obtain the appropriate medical attention.

Two Worlds Become One

Georgia State University Housing

As a Resident Assistant general job duties include involve planning and implementing the Residential Curriculum. One way to disseminate information is through the construction of bulletin boards. During the opening of the Spring 2018 semester RAs were given two topic options to choose from. I had a hard time deciding on which topic I would most enjoy constructing a bulletin board for since I am an advocate for both self love/awareness and financial literacy. I had to weigh out the options for the board I felt would appeal to residents the most. Out of the two options, I decided to construct my board about financial literacy. This allowed me to intertwine two aspects of my college life. Because I currently serve as the Economic/Employment Development chair of the NAACP, it was extremely satisfying to construct a board on ways to be financially literate. My position on the E-Board for NAACP always consist of me sharing how money works in the world, how to earn and make it, how to manage it, and how to both donate and invest. Finding a way to join these two aspects of my college career allowed me to realize that my position as a RA opens up so many opportunities to mentor, assist, and educate people. As a result of combining my two positions to construct my board, I was able to provide assistance to my residents on the subject of managing their money. Residents have showed me ways that they will practice being financially literate through downloading some of the apps I listed on my board and applying some of my tips to their daily financial habits. Experiences like this teach me to appreciate having multiple opportunities to serve as a leader here in the Georgia State University community, especially when I am able to combine training and experience from different positions.

It Takes A Village!

Georgia State University Housing

One aspect of being a Resident Assistant that I thoroughly enjoy is the ability to encourage and maintain a living-learning environment and atmosphere that is enjoyable and safe. During the 2017 Fall semester, I was able to help create an event that would allow residents to enjoy the fun festivities of Halloween in the safe environment of their own home, Piedmont North. Residents requested an event that would allow them to enjoy trick or treating and indulging in all types of sweets in a environment that wouldn't present any risk of danger. The task at hand was creating an event that would allow residents to have a fun and safe Halloween. I, then received notification from my residents that they wanted to help create a program that would be a safe alternative to partying and trick or treating in random neighborhoods. Along with three of my 8th floor residents, we created an event that was a housing- funded Halloween dorm party for residents living all over Georgia State University housing. Residents of the eighth floor were able to volunteer to help in a multitude of ways, including signing up their rooms to host a variety of activities, volunteering individually to help with activities located in other rooms, or donating candy and/or Halloween decorations to designated locations on the eighth floor. There were 5 rooms on the 8th floor open to all residents in housing. Some rooms were designed strictly for trick or treating while three rooms had activities that included playing video games, taking pictures at a photo booth, playing music, and face painting. About 100 residents were in attendance. As a result attendees learned more about each other. Residents received a chance to meet residents who live on different floors and even different buildings. I learned that I have some creative residents. From the decorations to the costumes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching my residents enjoy themselves entertain other residents.

Out Of State Director

Florida Caribbean Student Association Inc.

Florida, Usa

As Out of State Director my responsibilities were to be very proactive with out of state schools by facilitating communication between them to encourage those schools to support one another. I ensured that the organization’s rules and guidelines were being followed and offered assistance where necessary. Some of my duties included reviewing group calendars and helping to minimize clashing of events where possible as well as collecting district event reports, to be submitted to the FCSA executive board. My biggest task was assisting the out of state schools with coming to Miami for our 45th Leadership Conference hosted in Miami, FL. I had to coordinate and disseminate information pertaining to travel logistics to ensure that member schools would be able to enjoy a quality, safe, and economical conference experience. During my tenure I created the first FCSA Out of State Instagram page, and Zoom Video Communication meetings were offered to schools during delegate meetings which tremendously helped with communication and sending information/announcements. I also maintained and recruited out of state schools from several states across the United States. Schools included in the Out of State District were in the states of Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Connecticut, and New York.
