Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre is a charity whose purpose is to enrich lives and celebrate diversity and ambition in film and art, serving a population of 800,000 in and around the UK city of Leicester.Our cultural programme provides a “window on the world” – engaging a wide range of interests from entertainment and escapism, through cultural storytelling, exploration of history and heritage, to some of the big issues facing our society. Phoenix's annual audience has grown to 220,000.Phoenix presents over 350 different films from around the world every year, alongside innovative digital arts exhibitions, community cinema in rural locations, and learning and education opportunities for individuals, schools, colleges and university students.The art programme explores interesting and challenging aspects of modern life that lie at the intersection or art, science and technology. Responsible for producing a new development strategy, partnerships, and funding applications for green-travel projects, supporting people into education and training, and supporting busineses in volunteering and CSR.GWLL promoted greener living, working and learning through services and grant-assisted initiatives with a diverse range of private and public sector clients and partners. Core competences include recycling, energy, environmental standards, youth work, sustainable transport, green space and biodiversity, food growing, community volunteering, vocational training and employment programmes.

The company started as a university partnership to increase the volume, value and survival rates of start-up businesses across the East Midlands by providing membership services and delivering enterprise projects. Senior Executive responsible for enterprise in a large and broadly based university of 5 faculties, 2 institutes, 20,000 students and 3,000 staff:- Strategic development: planning and oversight of enterprise across academic divisions addressing diverse markets within the overall university strategic plan. - Partnership development: including HEFCE, DTI, economic development agencies, local authorities and business.- Leadership and management: leading the business development directorate comprising 45 staff and Leicester's Innovation Centre providing services to students, staff, start-up ventures and business.- Functional responsibility for commercial services and grant income streams. Coordinating and supporting the divisional teams including strategy, planning, audit, regulatory compliance, risk management and business controls for the function as a whole.- Growing initiative funding to £26 million and influencing the development of a further £15 million p.a. of commercial services and grant revenue.- Managing Director of De Montfort Expertise Ltd., Company Chairman of EMIN Ltd., and Director of East Midlands NTI Ltd.- Organisational development: forming the new support directorate from independent teams and then reshaping it through step-wise change and continuous improvement.- Enterprise: overseeing initiatives that increased student and staff participation in enterprise in partnership with the faculties.

A succession of new roles that combined academic and business development responsibilities in a range of sectors and academic subjects - culminating in Head of External Development of faculty comprising 3,500 students and 350 staff, covering computing, engineering and technology.Responsible for business planning, strategic partnerships, commercialising knowledge and intellectual property, and developing support services.

Co-leader of a research centre specialising in modelling systems for water networks. During this time the group won £1.6 million of grants and industrial contracts.Publishing in international research journals and participating in extensive international collaborations in Europe, Russia and China, (being made an Honorary Professor of Harbin University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, China, in 1996).Responsible for many industrial contracts providing modelling services to water companies in the UK and Europe. Thames Water contracted me for 10 years to model the restructuring of London’s water system, the largest civil engineering project of its time.

De Montfort Expertise is a subsidiary of De Montfort University that provides commercial services, including training, consultancy and conferences, to a wide range of clients.

East Midlands New Technology Initiative (NTI) was an education partnership providing grants to small and medium sized businesses to invest in new technology and related skills through approved courses.

Responsible for research and development of water network modelling systems as a member of a multinational interdisciplinary research centre. I developed numerical methods and computer-aided engineering systems on a range of computing platforms and was responsible for contract research, industry training and consultancy.
