I am an intellectual property attorney with a strong interdisciplinary background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. I have extensive experience in all aspects of intellectual property law, including patent and trademark prosecution, due diligence, opinion work, licensing, enforcement, and portfolio management. I have worked with individual inventors, small businesses, and Fortune 500 companies, and am particularly proud of my work with startups, from founding through IPOs and acquisition.I am also a skilled researcher who can connect with inventors as a peer, especially in the fields of biotechnology, optics, and medical devices. I was the featured Biophysicist in Profile in the September 2012 Biophysical Society newsletter. My research has focused on molecular organization and dynamics in biological systems, using a combination of theory, computer simulation, and experiment. Two more recent projects include studying (1) chromatin dynamics in interphase nuclei of Swiss 3T3 and HeLa cells using fluorescence photobleaching techniques and (2) secretory granule dynamics in PC12 cells using optical microscopy, a tissue plasminogen activator/green fluorescent protein hybrid, and diffusion theory.I have been a frequent collaborator with my wife, Bethe Scalettar. Our most recent project is an upper-division textbook on "Introductory Biomedical Imaging" (see Publications) that covers the following topics:* Basic optics (including the foundations of image formation, resolution, and contrast)* Transmitted light microscopy (including brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast, polarization, and DIC)* Standard fluorescence microscopy (including confocal, deconvolution, TIRFM, light-sheet, 2-photon)* Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy (including structured illumination, STED, and PALM)* Image processing and analysis* Ultrasound (including B-mode and Doppler ultrasound)* X-ray imaging and transmission computed tomography (CT)* Radionuclide imaging and emission computed tomography (SPECT and PET)* Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
