As a Field Engineer, I provide field oversight of various natural gas distribution pipeline projects as a contractor for People’s Gas & Light Company on their System Modernization Program (SMP). The SMP focuses on replacement of existing aging gas main distribution pipelines throughout the City of Chicago with new plastic (polyethylene) mains. My responsibilities include inspection and documentation of all work, ensuring work is completed according to specifications and company standards, and ensuring adherence to all job-site and personal safety requirements, as well as identifying, evaluating, and assisting in resolving field issues that arise with the job (e.g. line of lay, utility conflicts, permit issues, traffic control,etc.)

My work at ConocoPhillips consisted of working with the Rockies Business Unit Well Integrity Supervisor on the implementation of the well integrity program throughout several asset areas. This included gathering of well information from various engineers and data storage locations, and then performing risk analysis for the various operating areas on both a field wide and per well basis. I was also in charge of determining and implementing pressure management policies in conjunction with the specific well operating guidelines based on the determined risk tier for each well. Additionally, I worked to develop and implement materials for training of field office personnel to ensure compliance with corporate and business unit well integrity policies.

My assignment was a well integrity project, performing a risk assessment of the company's population of slim-hole monobore wells within their East Texas Asset. I began by researching the production inefficiencies, mechanical challenges, and integrity concerns associated with this group of wells. Additionally, I examined the circumstances, costs, and rate of the failures and intervention activities on these wells. I then used that information, along with the latest reserve evaluations to develop a risk based strategy for continued operation of this group of wells.

I began my internship by preparing the drilling procedures and AFE's for a 10 well drilling program in the Hugoton Field in Ulysses, KS. I was involved in daily meetings with a team of people from all corporate groups (geology, reservoir, drilling, completions, & production) in the decision making processes and in keeping everyone involved in the progress of the program as it commenced. Prior to commencement of drilling, I was able to spend a weekend in the laboratory testing pilot cement slurries for the wells and adjusted additives as needed to ensure the cement properties met our desired working specifications. I then spent the first week of the program on-site with the drilling foremen where I assisted in oversight of daily operations, ordering materials and services, performing mud-checks, tallying casing and calculating set depth, as well as filling out daily reports by inputting data into WellView. Upon returning to the office I was in charge of daily cost auditing to ensure contractor billing was aligned with contracted amounts, and analysis of actual costs to budgeted AFE amounts to ensure the project was keeping on budget. Through my cost analysis, I was able to present to the team near the mid-point of the drilling program that we far enough under budget that we could drill an eleventh well within our ten well budget. We were then able to implement the drilling of that well into the program and still remain under budget. At the end of the drilling phase, I also spent one additional week in the field to assist in oversight of completions operations.
