Work with a portfolio of the College's most stalwart supporters to help them thoughtfully and strategically advance their philanthropic goals with a variety of planned giving vehicles, including charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, gifts of appreciated assets, and gifts from tax-advantaged retirement accounts. Supervise tax filings, charitable solicitation registrations, and regulatory reporting. Collaborate with colleagues on marketing and events.

Communicate with donors to ensure that they feel appreciated and fully understand the impacts of their gifts. Ensure tax and regulatory compliance of life income and other planned gifts by compiling information, communicating with accountants and state and federal regulators. Draft gift agreements through collaboration with donors, gift officers, and relationship managers. Communicate with fiduciaries attorneys, life insurance companies, and retirement custodians to ensure proper distributions from trusts, estates, life insurance, and retirement assets. Collaborate on production and distribution of marketing materials. Plan and host donor events.

Assist director with all facets of the College's bequest and life-income gift programs, including regulation and compliance, information management, and marketing and events. Ensure life-income gift programs' compliance with applicable regulations. Monitor and track donor activity in Raiser's Edge database. Oversee production and distribution of marketing materials and donor communications. Plan and host donor events.

Estate administration comprised about half of my practice and included the probate process, but also trust administration, claiming benefits from life insurance and retirement plans, and complying with tax responsibilities (estate tax and fiduciary income tax obligations). About a quarter of my practice was estate planning, where I met with clients to become acquainted with them, their goals, and their family structures, and then crafted a suite of documents, often highly customized, to help carry out those goals. The rest of my practice included a variety of related matters, including adult guardianships, small business law, tax law, and real property, and beneficiary representation. I often worked closely with professionals in allied fields, including financial planning, accounting, and insurance. I still enjoy giving seminars and doing pro bono work to educate the public on estate planning and to ensure that the most vulnerable among us have at least basic protection.

I taught Wills and Trusts (spring 2021, spring 2020, spring 2019, spring 2018) and Wills Drafting Clinic (fall 2019, fall 2016). I taught entirely online in spring 2020 and using a hybrid approach in spring 2021.

Assisted assistant dean for development with written and oral communications with donors. Assisted with record-keeping of confidential donor information. Provided hospitality and acted as ambassador at events. Compiled mailings and communicated with prospective students. Led orientation tours for prospective students.

Interviewed and counseled clients. Researched statutes and prepared documents pertinent to estate planning, advance care directives, and guardianship. Spoke about the need for careful estate planning at community event. Researched, wrote, and presented memo on powers of attorney, incompetency, and guardianship. Academic credit position.

Applied technological tools to client needs to develop tailored, Web-based, database solutions. Redesigned database and interfaces for a large, NEH grant-funded, social science research project. Developed Web-based appointments system for main advising center; other centers later adopted. Developed large, Web-based, resource-finding tool used by 250,000 students and faculty at 40 colleges and universities in five states; product later sold to private company. Taught XHTML and CSS to University staff seeking certification through campus training program.
