I am Founder and CEO of the University of Warwick biotech spinout NanoSyrinx Ltd. The company was created to commercialise my PhD research. My research was specifically focussed on using synthetic biology approaches to engineer nano-scale bacterial 'syringes' for drug delivery and bio-nanotechnological applications. I graduated from my PhD in 2018, and have been running NanoSyrinx basically ever since.In 2014 I completed my multidisciplinary Master of Science postgraduate degree in Mathematical Biology and Biophysical Chemistry via the Molecular Organisation and Assembly in Cells Centre for Doctoral Training (MOAC CDT), from where I also obtained my PhD. During my MSc, I conducted 3 projects exploring various aspects of modern science, using experimental and theoretical approaches to study different topics within biological sciences, and additionally completed various modules aimed at creating truly interdisciplinary scientists.Prior to this I completed my undergraduate with Honours in Biology at Aberystwyth University, finishing top of my class. I was fortunate enough to finish my degree with a couple of awards for best performance in my degree scheme, as well as best dissertation (an investigation in to viral biomarkers for COPD and lung cancer with a placement at PHE Colindale), which earned me a nomination for the international Science, Engineering and Technology student of the year (SET) awards.

Chief Executive OfficerNanosyrinx Feb 2020 - PresentWarwick University , Coventry, GbIn 2020, we successfully started NanoSyrinx with a seed investment and in 2021 expanded this with our "Seed+" raise, making NanoSyrinx a venture- (and publicly-) funded company with almost £7M in backing as of Summer 2021. I currently lead the company as the CEO and am supported by an excellent technical and management team.NanoSyrinx is a synthetic biology company, developing novel biomacromolecular 'nanosyringes' as new therapeutic delivery vehicles. -
Committee MemberDsit Engineering Biology Steering Group May 2024 - PresentI was recently appointed to the UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) Engineering Biology Steering Group.The group with advise on, and oversee the deployment of ~£2BN pledged to the furtherance of engineering biology by the Government. This funding and the Steering Group recognises the significant impact that engineering biology is going to have on the future economy of the UK, having been chosen as one of the 5 key technologies of the future.

Doctoral StudentUniversity Of Warwick Sep 2014 - Nov 2018Coventry, GbI completed my PhD, as a continuation of my MSc, in the Molecular Organisation and Assembly in Cells DTC at the University of Warwick Chemistry Department, and passed my viva in November 2018.My PhD project investigated the potential for functionalisation of a novel biological nano-scale syringe using synthetic biology principles, and I have continued this work on to a number of Post-Doctoral roles at Warwick and in to the creation of a spin-out company, NanoSyrinx Ltd. -
Postgraduate Student (Msc)University Of Warwick Sep 2013 - Sep 2014Coventry, GbI was accepted on to a fully funded position at the MOAC (Molecular Organisation and Assembly in Cells) Doctoral Training School, in Warwick University in September of 2013. The course comprises an MSc course with taught and research components in a multidisciplinary interface between computation, statistics, mathematics, biology and chemistry/physical sciences. More specifically, module content I have undertaken included: analytical techniques for characterisation of biologically significant macromolecules, biophysics of microscopy and imaging, general chemistry and biology/genetics along with some physics concepts (usually where the concepts have overlapped with other disciplines), computational chemistry as well as mathematical modelling of biological systems, both computationally and otherwise.
