I write about banking, financial services and other industries for the Los Angeles Times Business Section.

I oversee a staff of five reporters covering banking, finance, retail, entertainment, energy and other industries. I guide reporters through the story development, reporting and writing processes for stories that appear in the weekly print edition of the Los Angeles Business Journal and on labusinessjournal.com.I also plan and coordinate several of the Business Journal's special sections, including quarterly banking and finance reports, and I assist with the production of the paper's biggest reporting project, our listing of the 50 Wealthiest Angelenos.I have several years of experience in investigating and estimating the wealth of ultra-high-net-worth individuals. In 2013, I discovered a previously unknown billionaire, Don Hankey, who was later added to the Forbes 400.I also write the occasional story, focusing on the oddities of the Los Angeles economy. Recent stories include "Good Deal?"​, a story examining a new type of card game that's sweeping through L.A.'s small-time casinos -- even as some casino owners want the games outlawed.Judges for the Association of Area Business Publications'​ annual awards called my body of work from 2014 "unusual, captivating and compelling."​ Judges also called me "a reporter with many talents,"​ saying, "he spots stories in unlikely places and crafts them with great ability."
