J.R. McMillan operates at the intersection of technology and philanthropy, leveraging the lessons of his complex career to help nonprofit organizations apply enterprise experience and sophisticated analytics to grassroots causes.In addition to service with Community Shares of Mid Ohio, Help-Portrait Project, Video the Vote and the Columbus Film Council, his workshops on audience engagement have been sponsored by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Wild Goose Creative, Thurber House and McConnell Arts Center. McMillan earned a Bachelor of Arts from Marshall University with a concentration in Journalism and Mass Communications, and has worked as a columnist, photographer, publicist and public radio producer. Following a shift toward industrial design and market research, McMillan founded Avatar Creative Technology, providing strategic insight and implementation for the art and design industry with an emphasis on community building, open source development and environmental sustainability.He continues to work actively as a screenwriter and script consultant, delivering marketing strategy for the independent film industry.
