Looking back on my career I have always had a somewhat odd interest in the Accounts Department in whatever line of work I did. I resisted the urge to do anything about it for a number of years, I guess because finance didn’t seem to be a the cool profession I envisioned for myself, and, I let you in on a secret (all about transparency here) I was rubbish at Maths. It wasn’t until I was about 29 years old that I dipped my toe into the accounts field, I finally applied for a position internally to the accounts department ( I was working in customer services for an insurance co) I had the interview and got the job, and as it turned out I was very good at it. The position was reconciling brokers accounts & a bit of credit control & I did love it. Although, my urge for travelling was calling so I went off travelling the world for a while, on my return I had my first child, and it was then that I started studying with the ICB (I later on switched to AAT) & so my love of double entry debits & credits began. I also slowly realised that finance was not the stuffy profession I associated it with being, & my lack of confidence in Maths, was not a problem. The biggest attributes which I saw and still see as essential to give the best possible service is, listening, communicating & being a wizz at problem solving. In 2018 I took the leap and started working as a freelance bookkeeper I managed to get a few charity clients, Covid happened, kept the same clients and my business went from strength to strength. I invested in mentors for myself, changed back to ICB to continue level 4, and really worked on my business, and what services we could offer to best suit our clients.
