As a part of the senior leadership team I interfaced with the executive team regularly to tackle org-wide issues. Within product and engineering, I defined high level strategies, roadmaps, budgets, hiring, and team structures, working closely with various leaders across product, design, and engineering.Proposed, managed, and completed the replacement of the video encoding and streaming provider for the Skillshare platform. Oversaw the development of an event driven, provider agnostic service, and migrated a catalog of 4M+ video minutes and captions in 5 languages for a savings of $1M+ over 3 years in vendor cost.Coached and promoted leadership development across engineering. Personally hired, coached, and promoted 5 individual contributors to become managers or directors, leading their own teams.

Built and oversaw the strategic and tactical rollout of internationalization and localization across the Skillshare product experience. Orchestrated a group of 50+ people across product, design, and engineering to internationalize all aspects of the product. Pitched the project to the executive team with a timeline of 6 months, and completed it under budget and only 1 week past deadline. Built automated jobs for human-in-the-loop and machine translations of static site copy, dynamic database content, as well as user generated content. Oversaw the development of Skillshare’s second major open source project, a string internationalization library for PHP (https://github.com/skillshare/formatphp).Built a team of 8 engineers in the Skillshare Colombia office. Partnered with a local coding bootcamp program to create a summer internship program that resulted in additional hires.

Led the integration of an A/B testing platform and feature flag based development and release. My team introduced the first group of microservices to the Skillshare stack — a new frontend and new APIs in Typescript, Next.js, React, Node.js, and federated GraphQL. Oversaw the development of Skillshare’s first open source library, Apollo Federation PHP (https://github.com/skillshare/apollo-federation-php).Led the creation of an event service for product analytics built on AWS Kinesis. Worked closely with data engineering team to power data analytics with a standardized event schema.Partnered with SRE team on continuous delivery, creating autonomous teams who owned microservices from inception to production, ultimately reducing engineering cycle time from weeks to just a couple of days.Relocated from NYC to Medellín, Colombia to open a Skillshare office, and began building a team of engineers there. Participated in conferences, hosted events involving guest speakers from local tech organizations, organized meetups, and coached local management with a focus on interviewing, hiring, and onboarding engineers.

Managed platform and mobile engineering (iOS, Android). Built and maintained backend services and APIs for web and mobile, with an emphasis on performance and testing. Began slowing picking apart a legacy monolith, introducing new technologies and infrastructure.Worked closely with People Ops and leadership teams to revamp the interviewing and onboarding process, and ultimately began building a first class product and engineering team.

Built and led the team that maintained the BounceX core platform. This included 4 direct reports with whom I worked very closely, all full-stack engineers, each with their own specialties. Our technical responsibilities included schema design, API implementation, application UI/UX, client-side Javascript, and end-user experience.Oversaw the implementation and roll-out of major products and features. Interfaced with the operations and product teams on project roadmaps, development timelines, and sprint deliverables. Held daily morning stand-up meetings. Mentored and grew junior developers via platform projects, peer coding, and code review processes. Worked closely with infrastructure engineers and took ownership of the deployment, health, and maintenance of my team's various applications. Conducted interviews and hired for roles throughout the engineering department. Collaborated with the sales team and participated in meetings with particularly large client prospects. All told, I helped the company grow from roughly 30 people when I started to over 230 people in 3 years.

Designed and implemented the migration of the BounceX platform from a monolithic PHP application to a Javascript web app and accompanying JSON API, each enjoying wide test coverage and continuous integration. Built a browser-based creative design application that both taught designers CSS and increased efficiency by an order of magnitude. Built a team of Javascript engineers in the process.
