I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina as a skinny, asthmatic kid who did not play school sports and appeared to have no discernible athletic talent. But, I realized by the time that I was 15 years old that I was going to need to live a very long, healthy life to accomplish half of things my adolescent mind had visualized. So from a very early age, I started paying attention to supplements with anti aging benefits, looking for ways to be healthier and live longer. That interest in health lead me to take up cycling although I was certainly not very good at the outset.I knew, even then, that I did not want to be ‘average,’ that I could not settle for normal. So I began to dream, but without an appreciation for planning and goal setting at that point. I had no mentors, but I was stubborn. Even in high school I was a bit of an entrepreneur, buying and selling snacks at the grocery store and selling them for a profit at school. After graduating, finally, from NC State University, I worked for some years in corporate America, mainly in media and technology before undertaking my first major foray as an entrepreneur, this first time in technology, the subsequent adventures being mainly in health and wellness. What I’ve learned over the years has served me well. In fact, it may have saved my life.Success, however, has never come quickly for me; it took 9 years to graduate from university, 30 years of cycling before winning my first National Championship, followed by a Pan American Championship, almost a World Championship (Silver Medallist) and two more US National Titles. Since then, I’ve lived for 3 years in Costa Rica, built business in a dozen countries, travelled in Europe and Latin America and managed to beat stage 3 cancer with the best combination of science and nature. So while I may not be the smartest or the fastest, I’ve learned how to maximize the few talents I do have and perfected the art of just never giving up.
