As a first-generation student, I came into college with a raw perspective that I could mold into anything I wanted it to be. But the thing is, I had no idea what that mold would be. I knew I wanted to pursue computer science, and my interest in it has been piqued for years, but my question was; what will my path be in this new foreign landscape?My initial involvement going into college was to go to school, leave early, and sleep in till the next day. This was my 'dream' plan to get through college and eventually land a decent job. I was uninterested in student organizations, and the thought of networking and doing anything outside classes was too much. However, the biggest influence that changed this dream was my two alumni brothers who encouraged me to take later courses, fill out my whole schedule, and get involved. It was a slow adjustment, and I certainly was not in my comfort zone, however, my path now would not have been possible without their intervention.I went from lazily going through the motions of college to being involved in leadership roles. I excelled in my early studies, connected with a bunch of wonderful people, took as many external opportunities as possible, and envisioned a greater path than what I originally wanted.I believe that mindset is the key to success. It is like a cognito benefit; once you know and think about it, you can't go back. I am a much clearer-minded, healthier, engaged, and outgoing person than I was a year ago, and I still have so many years left to continue to carve out my path.
