I've spent most of my career in the commercialization of products and technologies for redefining the performance and capabilities of wireless communication integrated circuits and devices used in consumer electronics. I enjoy investing myself at the intersection of "massive opportunity" and "that can't be done." I've worked in environments ranging from Fortune 500 companies to late-stage privates, seed-stage startups and university spinouts, in roles ranging from engineer to product marketer to business and customer development executive and CEO. Recently I've begun to move away from my wireless communications comfort zone into broader technologies and opportunities. My passion is in creating something new from things that already exist. I enjoy enabling highly creative people to innovate technology, and building a business around their work. I feel my greatest strengths are the ability to identify and define in detail a market opportunity for a particular technology, motivate highly talented people to invest themselves in that opportunity, and then plan and successfully execute into it.I am a wine geek (it's an intersection of science, art and hard work that tastes good), a novice cyclist (I can't run fast enough to feel like I'm going somewhere, but I can bike fast enough), a hack gardener (I like making things grow), and an amateur astronomer (because I'm not a good enough scientist to be a real one). Someday Carol and I will live near London (world class city on a human scale, and the best football in the world)...but we'll always love living in the best European city in the US, Portland.

Ceo, PresidentAmorphyx Inc. May 2012 - PresentCorvallis, Oregon, UsAmorphyx revolutionizes electronic device technology - sensors, diodes and transistors - by leveraging breakthroughs in high electric field-based thin film electronic devices enabled through the use of amorphous metals. The Company's initial product - a patented two-terminal thin film nonlinear device called the Amorphous Metal Nonlinear Resistor (AMNR) - utilizes existing flat-panel display backplane manufacturing equipment for smartphones, laptops, tablets, monitors and television displays. The Company extends the AMNR technology in creating the patented Amorphous Metal Hot Electron Transistor (AMHET). AMHET promises flexible display backplane processing, and holds the potential to replace semiconductor-based transistors in mmwave, RF, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits. In addition, Amorphyx integrates amorphous metal and high-k oxide dielectric materials into metal oxide semiconductor-based thin film transistors. The Amorphous Metal TFT (AMeTFT) redefines mobility and stability in thin film transistors. The Company is engaged with customers for improvements in metal oxide TFTs for premium-grade small-to-large-area LCD, OLED and microLED displays. At the Society for Information Display "Display Week" conference in May, 2018 Amorphyx demonstrated a 5" 85ppi 60 Hz LCD prototype designed and fabricated in collaboration with BOE, the world's largest display supplier. This prototype represents the first use of quantum tunneling electronic devices in displays for consumer electronics.Later in 2018, Amorphyx won Third Place in the Hangzhou (China) Overseas High-Level Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition from over 2000 entrants. Amorphyx is majority owner of an equity joint venture based in Hangzhou that collaborates with Zhejiang University to establish an R&D center based on Amorphyx technologies for the Chinese display industry. -
Entrepreneur-In-ResidenceOregon Nanoscience And Microtechnologies Institute Sep 2011 - PresentONAMI is Oregon’s first “signature research center” (SRC)—an academic, business and government collaboration to grow research volume and commercialization in the broad area of nano- and micro-scale science and engineering. ONAMI provides business development services for Oregon's research universities under the auspices of Business Oregon's Innovation Council. I have had the privilege of working with some of Oregon's most successful "hard technology" startups to date, including Craig Evans (CEO) and his wife Julia (CTO) at Energy Storage Systems (NYSE: GWH), Nick Day (CEO) at Diatomix (diatomixcorp.com), and Mark Ronay (CEO) at Liquid Wire (liquidwire.com).Current projects in development include MagWire (nickel-coated copper nanowire technology for high-performance transparent conductive films), NoMotus (a spring-based replacement for seismic buckling restraint braces in 1-5 story residential and commercial buildings), Phosio (metal oxide-based high refractive index optical film for AR/VR, automotive LIDAR and OLED smartphone applications), and Transformative Optics (a new approach to processing images particularly effective in low lighting, aimed at image recognition and high quality image processing applications).

Vp Corporate And Business DevelopmentSige Semiconductor Sep 2007 - Jun 2011Andover, Ma, UsSiGe was an analog/RF component supplier into consumer and commercial electronics markets. From near-failure in 2006 (losing $16M on $32M in revenue with $100M invested to date), the company became recognized as one of the fastest-growing RF semiconductor suppliers in North America and one of the premier privately-held semiconductor companies in the industry. SiGe registered with the SEC in July 2010 for an initial public offering scheduled for 1H11, but was sold to Skyworks Solutions in June 2011 for $250M including earnout - roughly 2.5x revenues and 35x net income.Responsible for creating and establishing corporate presence in financial industry, business and trade press. Lead on M&A activity, public relations, corporate branding and positioning. Key responsibilities on IPO.Responsible for expanding company's customer involvement from product sales to customer's development groups into executive-level strategic relationships with customers, product partners and channel partners. -
Vp MarketingSige Semiconductor Apr 2006 - Sep 2007Andover, Ma, UsResponsible for return on investment from company's three product lines enabling wireless communications in key segments of the consumer electronics market. Define and manage execution of product line strategy, business strategy, tactical product marketing. Manage marketing communications; define product positioning, execute communications on corporate positioning. Define and manage product partnerships, product channel relationships.I was brought into the company to lead their unsuccessful effort to enter the mobile phone RF power amplifier market. It was immediately clear the company lacked the design resources to execute a mobile phone PA. Instead, I partnered with the GPS product line manager to rapidly generate $12M in bookings for the product line's flagship product, and formed a product relationship with Samsung Semiconductor for the new Personal Navigation Display market. These bookings were a key part of convincing the company's Board not to dissolve the company at the end of 2006. The Samsung relationship was key in bringing Samsung Ventures in as the lead investor in a $20M equity round valuing the company at $100M and recapping the equity structure so that employees and investors would benefit from the company's sale in 2011. -
Ceo, PresidentXindium Technologies Apr 2003 - Dec 2005Xindium (Crystal Lake, IL and Westlake Village, CA) is a venture-funded fabless semiconductor company focused on improving the performance of mobile phones through the use of indium phosphide DHBT technology to manufacture higher performance RF power amplifiers which enable improvements in battery life and uplink data rate for next-generation EDGE and WCDMA networks. After the company failed in a next-generation optical communications market, I joined as CEO to redirect the technology development and business plan towards the mobile phone market.

Vp MarketingTropian 1997 - 2000Us(Co-founder) Wireless semiconductor startup focused on improving battery life of mobile phones by increasing efficiency of RF power amplifier through varying the PA supply voltage to track the RF waveform. Tropian pioneered so-called "polar modulation" in GSM mobile phones, a precursor to today's "envelope tracking" techniques for improving cellular PA performance. Tropian became recognized across the mobile phone industry for its pioneering efforts in digital polar modulation techniques. The company was initially funded by a syndicate of leading Silicon Valley venture capital funds (Crosspoint, Convergence Partners, InveStar) in 1998. Recognized by Red Herring in as one of its Top 100 Companies in 1999 and by Penton Publishing with a Comet Award in 2000. Tropian was acquired by Matsushita Electrical Corp (Panasonic Semiconductor) in 2006. -
