Logistics Team Member, Coming Home Project Retreats

Logistics team member for 2010-2011 Coming Home Project post-deployment reintegration retreats designed for Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans, children and facilitators. I met the Coming Home Project during their retreat in Middleburg, VA, May, 2010. After working with the staff, I was asked to return as a member of the logistics team for three additional retreats in San Antonio, TX and in Oceanside, CA.During the retreats, I interacted with participants (over 200 total) that included male and female combat veterans, their spouses, children and project facilitators. In addition to managing event operations, I frequently accompanied the participants on confidence-building activities such as rope courses and hikes, art therapy sessions and equine therapy. I was amazed to observe the emotional transformation of many of these veterans as they started to share their experiences with the group, their families, children and facilitators. This was the first opportunity for many of the participants to have a voice and discuss their thoughts with other veterans, spouses, parents and children. I was honored to participate in these retreats and gained a new found appreciation for what our veterans and military families sacrifice.
