The data ecosystem can be broken up into four components:- Capturing the right data- Connecting data to where it can make the biggest difference- Reducing data complexity to tell stories- Finding the most meaningful story data can tellI focus on the first three steps to empower my team to do the last.As an experienced data pipeline developer, with enthusiasm for good systems architecture and quantitative storytelling, I have spent the last decade and a half building data pipelines for open source packages, research teams, non-profits and companies to enable teams to process technical data with 10x efficiency gains and visualization improvements. As an assistant professor at USC I introduced novel applications of machine learning into pure math. At Insight I expanded into the cloud-based ecosystem, familiarizing myself with code as infrastructure techniques to develop a database for understanding the temporospatial effects of federal disasters on real estate prices. I continue to look forward to helping in mapping humanity and understanding our world.

Data Engineering FellowInsight Data Science May 2020 - Oct 2020San Francisco, Ca, UsBuilt a PostgreSQL database to measure monthly real estate price changes relative to distance to federal disasters, using PostGIS & TimescaleDB extensions for enhanced indexing speed. Designed a flexible data model to facilitate data collection and diverse analysis scenarios. Optimized each ETL pipeline for aligning the real estate data and preprocessing the geotagged data using Scala and Spark SQL to enable near real time query responses through a Dash UI. Developed a series of shell scripts for using AWS CLI to deploy each pipeline and incorporate the heterogeneous data from multiple FEMA databases, the NIFC, local government OpenData sources and real estate listing services into a comprehensive data warehouse. -
