I am a Partner in Venable LLP's Patent Litigation Group. My practice focuses on complex intellectual property disputes, including patent and trade secret litigation and inter partes review. I have represented numerous international and domestic companies as both plaintiff and defendant in IP disputes in addition to counseling clients outside of the courtroom to protect innovations, avoid infringement, or identify those impinging on IP rights.I have practiced patent law for over 15 years as both a Patent Agent and Patent Attorney. I hold a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University and a J.D. from New York Law School, summa cum laude.I have gained extensive experience across a wide variety of technology fields, including: wireless telecommunications and networking, audio/video codecs and standards (e.g., DVD, Blu-Ray, AVC, VC-1, and ATSC), video streaming, computer architecture, internet protocols, semiconductor fabrication, digital signal processing, circuit design and analysis, website development, optics, and liquid crystals. I am also proficient with programming languages such as Java, C++, C, and JavaScript by leading source code reviews for both patent holders and defendants. I have personally reviewed code and supervised teams to review source code for some of the most popular operating systems, smartphones, and websites in the world.My “pre-attorney” background gives me a rare perspective that I bring to bear on behalf of my clients as a litigator. Before entering law, I worked as an electrical engineer and software developer building telecommunications equipment for the U.S. military, which allows me to better engage on technical issues and communicate with stakeholders. As a Patent Agent, I drafted and prosecuted patent applications in the United States Patent Office and coordinated prosecution in foreign patent offices, enabling me to identify mistakes in prosecution that can lead to weakened patent claims and advise clients on how to avoid such issues.
