Hopefully you stick around until the end but here’s the elevator pitch for efficiency. I’ve sold travel since 2012: I started as a retail leisure travel agent, progressed to group travel, opened a new groups department, took a year off to write and travel myself, returned to selling travel, then began selling premium airfares to retail and corporate travel agents and agencies. Here’s a short list of things I picked up along the way: travel account management, Sabre and Apollo GDS, sales and customer service, group travel, airline contracts and markets, basic ticketing, exchanges, and voids, complex FIT design, and problem solving under pressure.Essentially, I can sell, book, and manage individual leisure and corporate travel, large groups, complex premium airfares, and everything in between.If you’re still here, I’ll awkwardly treat you to a few miscellaneous items in no particular order. (I do promise I’m much better at selling travel than I am at selling myself.)I have a rule for myself: only expend energy on items within your control, and strategically expend that energy to solve as many problems as possible. Lather, rinse, repeat in every area of life.I’ve spent the last six-ish years picking things up and putting them down, also called “lifting weights.” I’m as geeky with it as I am with everything else and I’ve logged each workout in a notebook. This data helps me continuously learn and optimize my program. Training has ingrained the skills of crafting and working at a plan, delaying instant gratification, and steadfastly doing mentally and physically difficult things in pursuit of goals. Motivation is an emotion, it’s fleeting; hard-earned discipline prevails when motivation is scarce. For some fun, I teach complete beginners how to ride motorcycles and I administer the motorcycle licensing exam in Pennsylvania. So far only one student has run me over, and they’ve all taught me the unmatched joy of sharing a passion with others. Learning to competently teach a complex, intimidating skill has made me a more patient and thoughtful person and colleague, encouraged me to confidently help with what I know, and taught me to humbly, perpetually, be a student myself. The travel industry has afforded me opportunities to see the world and its many beautiful cultures. It’s cheesy but true: travel is the only “thing” we buy that makes us richer.There’s a bunch more but the guy in the back is nodding off already, I’ll trip over my feet while attempting a bow and exit stage left.
