Farm Manager / Company Director
This stage of Managing the Farm and acting at the same time on the Companies board of directors saw an acceleration of changes in our farming landscape: The ever increasing wild dog population, a more complicated economic reality in Argentina and a dwindling pool of skilled farm labour. As director I elaborated a Farm Plan, this was a guiding document with our business strategy. It reflected; What the goals were, How they were going to be achieved and Whom was going to be responsible for getting there. This plan was handed to the family members to evaluate and once agreed upon turned into a Action Plan.In the year 2005 decided to trial a sheep breed change from Corriedales to MPM Merinos, gaining on wool quality while not loosing carcass weight. This trial was a reversible solution in case the results were unsatisfactory. In 2009 the decision was made to go ahead and change the whole flock. In the year 2009 I introduced the concept of Holistic Management to the family. The implementation of a Holistic Farm Plan based on Allan Savory's work with the help of Ovis XXI and HMI was inmediate. In 2011 the introduction of land monitoring allowed our products to be certified as Sustainable.Implemented a more pro-active workforce management, with regular weekly meetings. This gave our workforce a larger stake in land and stock decision making. This improved their attitude towards their responsibilities by a significant factor. So as to tackle the wild dog problem that greatly impacted our production six "Montañas del Pirineo" stock protecting dogs that live among the sheep were introduced. Eight out of nine neighbours abandoned sheep farming completely because of this problem, Viamonte is still in the race.In 2012 started developing a property in Rio Grande as a Real Estate investment generating monthly revenue.
Farm Manager
This 40.600 ha property shears 17.000 sheep and runs 1.600 cattle and employs between 10 and 21 people depending on season.Stock & Land: organizing and executing all work related to sheep and cattle. Buying rams and bulls, selling stock when ready for market, feed management, stocking rate management, improving paddocks shapes and sizes to suit managementCapital: budgeting, cash flow control and preparations for accountant and family meetings, selling of wool, beef, lamb and mutton to local and continental markets, invoicing and payment follow ups and accountancy. Infrastructure maintenance and improvement.Workforce: management of the work calendar. Attracting and retaining employees. Providing space for 2 to 3 university students to spend summer months on the farm doing practice.Elaborated extensive Business Reviews of S.A.G.y F. BRIDGES y REYNOLDS and S.A. ESTANCIAS HARBERTON aimed at informing family members on the initial status for both family companies.Trained and maintained a team of 5 working dogs.In the year 1998 I introduced the family to the habit of regular family meetings to discuss business progress and work on the separation of business and family matters. For the initial stages I brought in experts to smooth things out.So as to improve and assist management I developed StockMan, a farm management framework. This is a client/server solution programmed in Python on top of Zope. This framework integrates all farm information and allows a continuous work-flow across all management areas. This framework grew as different features where needed and as part of this I integrated GIS capabilities to reflect land management decisions.During my time as manager I also worked on a GIS support system generating land management coverages based on satellite imagery, aerial photography and ground work. Later on extended this analysis when SRTM data was available to work with contour lines, water catchment areas and determining warm/cool places.
Director
This 20.000 ha property that includes islands along the Beagle Channel has been in the family since 1886, it receives approximately 20.000 visitors/year mainly because of it's historical significance and natural beauty. As Director my main concern was to work as a team with the President of the company, elaborating and putting a Farm Plan into action, something deeply needed by the company as it had been in a reactive management situation for many years. Every aspect of the company was analyzed in detail, it's resources, it's contracts, it's human capital and how it was currently run.Elaborated a Farm Plan, submitted it to the family for review and then once approved started putting it into action, this meant many challenges as the previous management had been unchallenged for a very long time. Worked in conflict resolution with firmness as this is a family company that needed a change in direction, managed to get a good part of the farm plan underway. The change in the company is evident in that it is now self standing, with enough margin to meet improvements that are necessary, with a work ethic that separates family from work and with a clearer picture for all those concerned. The direction is still necessary and looking out for obstacles ahead is still an issue, the Farm Plan will be reviewed periodically so as to make sure the company keeps going in the right direction. My reason for leaving this position is a personal family decision of searching new horizons, the position has been covered by my brother in law in whom I have utmost trust.
