Responsible for bringing a secure, scalable multi-tenant application to production. This application is hosted on AWS, is HIPAA-compliant, and is comprised of several microservices and serverless components. The backend technology stack is Django and Postgres, written in Python. The front end is React and Redux, written in TypeScript. There is an NX monorepo for front end applications, to facilitate reuse of shared components.Leadership responsibilities involved managing an onshore team and interfacing with a consulting offshore team, and with product management, customer support, and mobile engineering.I oversee regular releases of two products, and frequently interface with customers.

As an engineering manager, I am responsible for:- The architecture, design and development of BrightSign's cloud services. The cloud services use a combination of JavaScript, Node.js, ASP.net, .Net Core and Nginx. Hosted on AWS, Azure and on-premise. Technologies used include MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, Elastic Search- The company's front-end applications. These use React, Redux, Electron, and Webpack- Some of the company's embedded applications. These use Node.js and BrightScriptOther responsibilities:- Technical Liaison for large partners and integratorsAs an Engineering leader at BrightSign, I was responsible for the design and implementation of the OAuth authentication service, the Websockets messaging service, and the B-Deploy device provisioning service, which are all part of BrightSign's BSN.cloud. I oversaw the development of the BrightSign device software that communicates with BSN.cloud. These services were designed not only to scale, but to be deployed to any cloud host, or on-premise. All of this software is used in production by BrightSign's customers every day.Working with BrightSign's partners, I oversaw the integration of partner applications with BrightSign software with companies such as Amazon, SiriusXM and Cayan.As a manager of employees, I hired, mentored and managed three teams. I was also responsible for managing the relationship with an outsourced engineering team.

Responsible for migrating the user interface from a templating system to a javascript technology. Investigated javascript frameworks, selected AngularJS, and prototyped the solution, which was challenging as it needed to integrate with the existing GUI technology. The solution I created was a library of GUI widgets/components implemented as AngularJS directives, which communicate with the back-end using REST and JSON.Managed the teams and led the design for new features such as reporting and alerting. Served as scrum master for a cross-functional team.Managed the presentation layer teams, who are responsible for the product's management console, the REST APIs, and the proxies that implement the product's role based access controls. These are complex projects that required a lot of coordination of onshore and offshore teams.

Managed the quality assurance team. Took over the team at a critical time. Hired key team members, brought three offshore teams up to speed. Started three automation projects (Selenium, Jmeter, Powershell). Oversaw the implementation of TestRail as our test case management tool. These changes dramatically improved the quality of the product.

Responsible for the presentation layer for a virtualization security product. Built the user interface framework using Wicket, HTML, CSS and jQuery. Researched, recommended and integrated Spring, Hibernate, Maven, BIRT, Liquibase and Lucene into the product. Responsible for integrations with third party products from CA and Symantec. Improved code quality by integrating PMD into the nightly build. Internationalized the user interface and localized all dates and times to the user's timezone. Guided the engineering team by creating a coding standards and best practice document. Our product, HyTrust Appliance, won Best of Show at VMWorld 2009.

Designed and built a web-based distributed administration system using the following technologies: Tapestry, Spring, JGraph, and XStream. Simulated the system with biological techniques using Spring and JFreeChart. Architected and built an administration interface in MMC (Microsoft Management Console) and C#. Windows and SUSE Linux.

Led the effort to create V-Builder (a voice application development environment) -- a graphical flowchart voice application builder. Within one month of release, won an award at the most important conference for this industry (Best Development Environment at Speechtek/Avios). This product represents a huge step forward for the industry. Accomplished with a very small team and a very focused agenda. Made extensive use of iterative usability to make sure we were exceeding our customer's needs.

Co-invented a novel software architecture for speech recognition applications consisting of reusable Java components. Awarded US patent in November 2001.Lead engineer for Nuance Grammar Builder, an IDE for speech recognition grammar development and testing (Visual C++, MFC, MS Access). Responsible for internationalizing this product and localizing it to Japanese.

Lead engineer for QuickBooks Internet Connectivity projects: Architected replication solution to connect Web-based and call center product purchasing transactions (SQL, C++);Created database-driven web site for QuickBooks users to search for accountants and trainers in their geographical areas (ASP, SQL Server, NT Server).Lead engineer for the QuickBooks Pro Timer application: Designed and implemented the Timer, which enables users to track time and submit time-sheets to QuickBooks electronically (Visual Basic, Access, C++)Extended printing functionality of Quicken for Windows and QuickBooks for Windows and Macintosh; Rewrote font cache to expand range of fonts and improve font rendering for printing and print preview (Borland C++); Designed and coded interface from QuickBooks to TurboTax and Macintax print engines. Used this interface to add feature to QuickBooks to print federal forms 940 and 941.

Conceived and developed C++ application to display ultrasound images in Windows 95 based on the (then new) DICOM standard. Important innovation because no such software-only product existed at the time.Lead Engineer for developing C++ application for Ultrasound Automated Test software project. Developed digital signal processing algorithms to analyze captured data. Responsible for measuring and calibrating acoustic output of ultrasound beamformer to conform to FDA regulations.
