Breakaway Media, LLC is a female veteran-owned small business that was developed to continue to publish the quarterly peer-reviewed Journal of Special Operations Medicine. The Journal of Special Operations Medicine started publication in 2000 under the Command Surgeons Office of the United States Special Operations Command. I was the managing editor until my retirement in 2011 when I started Breakaway Media to keep the journal in publication.

Managing and Production Editor and publisher for the Head Quarters United States Special Operations Command, Command Surgeon’s (HQ USSOCOM/SG) published Journal of Special Operations Medicine (JSOM), a peer-reviewed military medical journal for Special Operations Forces (SOF) medical personnel. Twelve years of HQ USSOCOM experience with a strong working knowledge of SOF medical needs. Skilled in analyzing for quantity and quality of peer-reviewed scientific/medical content and planning, organizing, and directing an editorial board of health professionals through each peer-review process. Proficient in management, desktop publishing, strong grammar, proofreading, and editing skills. Registered nurse with 25 years’ experience. Performing research and feasibility studies in determining survivability of the journal in a commercial environment.

The Journal of Special Operations Medicine (JSOM) was established in 2000 under the Command Surgeon’s Office of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM-SG). Breakaway Media, LLC, was developed in 2011 by the long-time editor of the JSOM and now continues to produce and publish the journal. In addition to the peer-reviewed quarterly journal, Breakaway Media publishes the annual JSOM Advanced Tactical Paramedic Protocols Handbook (ATP-P) for the Advanced Tactical Practitioner. Mission Statement: The Journal of Special Operations Medicine (JSOM) will continue to provide the same high quality peer-reviewed journal everyone has come to laud while increasing our readership to include tactical emergency medical support (TEMS) providers and anyone interested in emergency medicine in a tactical or austere environment.

Military reserves since 1987/Army: 87-90; Air Force 90-2011. Served as a Lt Col assigned as the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Reservist to the Command Nurse, HQ Air Force Reserve Command, Robins AFB, GA. Previously assigned as a flight nurse to the 622nd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES), MacDill AFB. Developed training program for medical personnel. Converted Air Force technical requirements into nationally applicable continuing education format, effectively unifying military and professional training paradigms. Developed a consolidated training curriculum; favorably received by the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS). This group recommended the system as the Air Force standard. Assisted other Air Force Reserve Commands with training development. Flight nurse with management position as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of Education and Training for approximately 300 AES members. OIC, Mobile Aeromedical Staging Facility, supervised 23 air-medical personnel culminating in mission success. OIC of the National Disaster Medical Services (NDMS) Mobile Aeromedical Staging Facility coordinated 67 inter-agency personnel for mass causality exercise with superb results. Coordinated and oversaw training of medically related inservices for continuing education hours. Coordinated the development of an Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) program to get 100% of unit's medical technicians EMT certified by the year 2002.13. Developed and designed program Orientation and Instruction Guide issued to new flight nurses entering the unit. Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm October, 90- May, 91. ICU (Cardiac, Surgical, and Respiratory) Pool – Cared for patients that were critically ill, monitored cardiopulmonary status through the use of cardiac monitors, Swan Ganz catheters, ventilators and various other lifesaving and diagnostic equipment. ER--Triage and prioritizing patients as to the degree of their injury or illness, and providing appropriate treatment; patient education regarding their disease process, diet management, and medications. Charge nurse role when needed in the progressive care units (PCU) emergency room (ER) and intensive care units (ICU).
