About Jean-Sébastien Pourcelot
My academic interests focus on the study of the archaeological past of the Isthmus of Panama particularly as it pertains to the colonial period of its history and the analysis of ceramic material. I am interested in investigating issues related to processes of formation and negotiation of social identities through the study of material culture, the impacts of colonization on indigenous and African groups, and their cultural responses. I am also interested in the pre-Columbian past of the country (particularly that of the Gran Darien region), and the establishment of cultural areas through the study of the production and circulation of ceramic artifacts.

Archaeological Research Assistant
I conducted analytical tasks within the framework of an academic project whose objective is to examine change and continuity in food consumption practices during the post-colonial occupation of the site of Boca del Drago (Bocas del Toro, Republic of Panama). For this graduate assistantship, I translated historical documents that pertained to the area of study from Spanish to English, created a typology for non-glazed ceramic artifacts based on their technological and decorative attributes.
Archival Research Assistant
I conducted analytical tasks within the framework of an academic project whose objective is to examine demographic movement in various multiethnic towns subject to the Villa of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca, Mexico) during the colonial period. For this graduate assistantship, I completed a database with information collected from 18th century marriage records of the towns of Chihuitan and Ixtepec, and from 18th and 19th centuries death records of the towns of Ixtaltepec and Juchitan.
Curator Of The Archaeological Reference Collection
I managed the Archaeological Reference Collection (ARC) of the Patronato Panama Viejo, which is composed of more than 5500 objects, for 4 months. During my administration, I supervised and assisted visiting archaeologists who conducted research on materials excavated from the Panama Viejo site, elaborated the first descriptive catalogue of archaeological artifacts in permanent display at the Museum of the Patronato Panama Viejo, and updated the inventory of objects of the ARC. Additionally, I proposed a specialized classification form for ceramic artifacts.
Archaeological Monitor
I conducted 17 months of field, laboratory, and administrative duties within the framework of a development-oriented project undertaken as part of a highway construction plan which was executed around and within the boundaries of the Panama Viejo site. In the field, I was in charge of monitoring the areas which were directly impacted by earthmoving activities executed with heavy machinery, and performed numerous rescue excavations (35 in total) pertaining to different archaeological features. In the laboratory, I was in charge of classifying, analyzing, and storing the archaeological material that was recovered during the project. Administratively, I helped organize and store the information (in digital and paper formats) that emerged during the course of the project, and developed the standardized format for “archaeological findings reports”.
Archaeological Research Assistant
I conducted 2 months of excavations within the framework of a development-oriented project undertaken as part of a highway construction plan which was executed around and within the boundaries of the Panama Viejo site. In this initial phase of the project, which was performed prior to the construction of the highway, I excavated in two of the seven zones identified by the project’s impact report as “Areas of High Archaeological Potential”.

I conducted 3 months of excavations within the framework of a development-oriented project aimed at recovering the colonial layout of Panama Viejo’s main plaza in order to incorporate it in the design of various museums which are being constructed in-site. I was in charge of excavating 11 units.
