Profile bio

About Jamie Spaulding

Currently, I am the Director of Forensic Science and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Science at Hamline University. Since coming to Hamline, I have developed and launched two degree programs: a BA in Forensic and Investigative Science and a BS in Forensic Science with integral concentrations in Forensic Biology or Forensic Chemistry. The Forensic Science programs now serve over 130 students. While at Hamline, I have curated a robust curriculum which provides practical hands-on training and experience to my students. I have prepared nine courses since starting in the fall of 2020, six which were developed to expand the curriculum, and three were significantly revised. Ultimately, the foundation of my teaching philosophy and my goals in the classroom are to arm students with the ability to think critically, to provide students with the tools to develop their critical thinking capacity and have them continually challenge convention in order to improve upon current knowledge. When possible, I implement materials used for certification exams by the American Board of Criminalistics or the International Association of Identification. I have also implemented a research culture within my program where students can continue and extend their learning beyond the classroom. The focus for my research to date has been in the interpretation of physical evidence and how multiple types of evidence are interrelated. More specifically, my research evaluates the weight of evidence for case assessment purposes and integrates forensic intelligence modeling to extend the utility of forensic analysis beyond traditional case-by-case basis usage. My goal is to develop methods and tools which provide transparent open-source solutions for current needs of the forensic science and investigative communities.I take pride in the fact that I have trained investigators, not technicians. I believe it is my duty to train students to become investigators who assemble pieces of a puzzle, not simple accumulate them. I challenge my students to think critically so that when they encounter a crime scene, they are aptly prepared to handle it professionally, regardless of the circumstance. If my vision and values are the same as yours, and you are interested in collaboration, you can reach me at jsspaulding92@gmail.com.
