Beat Forester
In my current role I am responsible for planning and managing large-scale forest management and harvesting operations, including direct production. In addition I have day-to-day dealings with issues relating to forest planning, conservation, recreation and public access, estates, civil engineering and wildlife management. To date, I have delivered over 500 ha of restocking and 250 ha of harvesting, and have prepared, marketed and managed a large number of standing sales and roadside timber contracts. I have also played a key role in planning a 100 ha woodland creation project in Northumberland and have been solely responsible for managing the implementation phase. I have made several innovations in my time, such as advancing large-scale species diversification, making improvements to ground preparation practices (including brash recovery), and instigating the use of drones for operational planning. This role has greatly advanced my professional skills and experience, and due to the large responsibilities of the job I have developed excellent time management and workload prioritisation skills.
Beat Forester
Following completion of the Trainee Forester Programme, I transitioned to a different Forest District to take up this short-term appointment in charge of a busy multipurpose forest beat and five operational staff members. I was responsible for delivering diverse forest management and harvesting work programmes, all with a strong appreciation for recreation and public access, estates issues, wildlife management and issues relating to local stakeholders. As such, this role accelerated my career progression greatly and taught me how to manage a large workload effectively and meet deadlines.
Trainee Forester
This highly competitive 2-year graduate scheme provided me with comprehensive on-the-job training and exposure to all departments of the Forest District, namely land management, planning and environment, recreation, estates, civil engineering and wildlife management. Throughout the course of the programme I received extensive formal training in topics such as silviculture, forest mensuration, contract management, and health and safety.
Forest Worker
This role provided valuable insight into estate forestry and the day-to-day work and balancing of various interests. I worked closely with the Head Forester and inhouse direct production harvesting team, as well as independently on tasks such as forest mensuration and supervising restocking, beating up and tending operations.
Forestry Contractor
Immediately following graduation from university I set up as self employed to provide various freelance forestry services, including farm woodland creation planting, restocking, surveying and mapping, tending and forest inventory.
Work At Height And Rescue Instructor
In this role I was responsible for delivering and assessing climbing and rescue courses for various industry professionals. Courses combined elements of practical instruction and classroom based lecturing, with a strong health and safety focus.
Operations Manager
Here I was chiefly responsible for the management of a team of 15 staff at a forest adventure business in Norway, meeting targets and working to budgets. Duties included devising and implementing staff training programmes and assisting with the design and implementation of business developments.
