Unix System Administrator responsible for the installation and setup of the SUN webservers, Oracle databases, and Cisco network equipment that powered eCompany, a print and online business magazine funded by Fortune Magazine.Projects: *Built and installed the initial hardware and systems for launch. *Trained the IT staff for 24x7 management of the systems. * When Fortune Magazine took over Business 2.0, I migrated the eCompany/Business 2.0 data from the Oracle database to the Fortune Sybase format using XML/XSLT. * Web application to manage newsletter creation and delivery (Java, PL/SQL). * Custom content management features for Vignette CMS (Java, Perl, TCL, PL/SQL). This project entailed adding features for staging content on development and QA servers, then publishing the approved content and template changes to the production servers. * When eCompany acquired Business 2.0 magazine, I migrated the original Business 2.0 content, which was file system based, and used XML/XSLT to convert and load the content into the Oracle database. * Migrated hardware from original co-location facility to a new one with no downtime. * Oracle DBA for Oracle 8.1.6 database. Oracle database stored all of the content used by the content management system -- Vignette. * Designed and built the development environment for the software engineers. Designed and built the production server environment including networking and load balancing solutions.

Disney acquired Infoseek and offered me a contract to help them integrate the Infoseek systems with the Disney.com systems.Projects: * Integration of Disney.com, espn.com and Infoseek. Disney, Infoseek, and another Disney acquisition, espn.com, were all running from different datacenters on completely different technology. My role in this project was primarily finding integration solutions and working with software engineers to implement the changes.

Senior Systems Administrator for (at the time) the fourth most popular search engine on the Internet. Responsible for datacenter of over 200 SUN servers and another 300 SUN workstations used by software engineers, as well as the network infrastructure. Responsible for multiple load-balanced and redundant DS3 serial links to the internet which required constant monitoring and tuning for performance. Eventually took on the responsibility of the Oracle databases because the current DBA quit and I had worked with him enough to get a good handle on DB administration.Projects: * Became Oracle DBA. Time was allocated for me to learn the necessary DBA skills using Oracle self-study courses and a large supply of Oracle books. * Web application to manage the scheduling of conference rooms (Python, Berkeley dB). * Web application for e-mail lists and aliases management (PHP, Perl, LDAP). * Suite of scripts to automate the upgrade of applications to Solaris servers. * Variety of tools for system and network monitoring and management (Perl, C). * Y2K. This project required me to audit all of the Infoseek computer and network systems, applying patches as necessary and reviewing code rolled by software engineers. I also had to follow some guidelines that Oracle released on ensuring Y2K compatibility for the Oracle databases.

Senior Systems Administrator responsible for 25 DEC servers and over 700 NeXT Step workstations.Projects: * Wrote suite of scripts to crawl the network of over 700 hosts and build an asset database (Perl, DBM). * Wrote suite of scripts to automate the build of new systems, and the subsequent upgrade of applications for all 700 hosts.
