Working on database technology at Vultr

LeapDB is a streaming SQL and materialized view software as a service application designed to work with MySQL databases. LeapDB can turn queries that would take hours into queries that take seconds by caching the output of queries and using change data capture technology to incrementally update those result sets when rows change in the source database. LeapDB also provides streaming queries which survive service restarts, and intelligent notifications based on change data capture. LeapDB supports both row and columnar storage. Queries based on columnar tables can be between 10x and 100x faster than queries on row databases, and the output of queries can be incrementally updated, providing stunning performance improvements, in testing up to 10000 times faster than queries without materialization.

I develop and support the WarpSQL fork of MySQL 8.0. WarpSQL includes the WARP storage engine, a columnar engine for MySQL with compressed bitmap indexes.

Responsible for keeping MySQL, Memcache, Varnish, and Redis running optimally. Maintain the automation for backup test and restore verification . Create and maintain schema management tools with automated online schema change for the sharded database infrastructure. Migrated significant portions of the image management infrastructure to the cloud. Created tools for management of ProxySQL, as well as database failover tools. Migrated various parts of production infrastructure from on-premises datacenter to cloud using terraform for software defined infrastructure. Created and maintained Chef recipes for software infrastructure. Participated in regular on-call rotation.

As a consultant, I was responsible for both scheduled and emergency interventions in customer production environments. As a trainer I travelled around the US teaching four day database performance engineering and database administration classes. As a support engineer, I helped Percona customers with both production and development systems, supporting a range of MySQL related products. As a software engineer, I was responsible for creating tools and products focused on web application performance, and SQL analytics performance.

I was responsible for migrating the company's MySQL databases from cloud infrastructure to big iron machines, with zero downtime for the production databases. Created a Vertica based data warehouse from OLTP databases.

I diagnosed problems, performed performance audits, and helped improve information processes for Percona customers. I also frequently delivered training as well, both in public training events and to private audiences at some of the world's most prominent companies.

I was responsible for production MySQL infrastructure for Gazillion properties. Worked primarily on improved monitoring and logging using MonAMI, Nagios and Ganglia. Implemented fast refresh materialized views using Flexviews for analytics support of game metrics. Worked on various data center automation tools for virtualization. Production support of MySQL database applications and hosted game databases.

My primary role was MySQL integration development and testing the “Kickfire Analytic Appliance for MySQL” for compatibility and interoperability with the Sun MySQL database product. I interacted with the QA, Engineering, Marketing and Technical Services teams to identify issues with the appliance, helped plan future technical and functional requirements and provided internal and external education about the appliance. A regular blogger on the Kickfire web site, I authored the bulk of the technical blog posts about the Kickfire appliance as well as contributing to the Kickfire documentation, including the DDL, DML, transactions and indexing chapters of the Kickfire manual.As a senior sales engineer, I travelled to customers, explained the technical aspects of the Kickfire appliance, provided integration assistance, and was presented at technical conferences about the Kickfire analytics appliance.

I was responsible for designing, tuning and supporting AdBrite's extensive MySQL infrastructure of over 1400 MySQL database servers as part of a a small three member team. I made ad serving infrastructure improvements, data replication improvements and caching layer improvements. These changes resulted in less downtime and faster ad serving times. I developed tools to assist in the monitoring and load balancing of HTTP (web servers), MySQL and other network services requiring high availability. I also developed flexviews, an open source (LGPL) toolkit for building and maintaining materialized views for MySQL.

Overall focus was as a general LAMP stack consultant for a number of dedicated customers. I created and tuned Memcached layers. I tuned databases, upgraded them to newer versions, and migrated databases from MyISAM to InnoDB. I also created a Lucene based database search application with SOLR. Most of my work involved PHP scripting.

As the platform engineering DBA, I was responsible for production databases for key engineering systems. I successfully migrated important databases from MyISAM to InnoDB resulting in much higher availability and scalability for key components of the engineering infrastructure. I was also responsible for maintaining large MySQL databases for metrics collection for the Yahoo Monitoring Team (yMON). I was an active participant on internal MySQL support mailing lists, providing MySQL advice to a large part of the user base at Yahoo. I was also the primary developer of internal tools for the 'Big Thinkers' campaign, designed to draw world class talent to Yahoo, helped with development of the single sign on 'bouncer' application, and developed 'acquisition factory' a tool for helping Yahoo! acquire other companies.

As a consultant with Serene, I was tasked with creating an acquisition management application for the Corporate Development department at Yahoo. The PHP application handles time tracking, milestone creation and reporting, progress charting, team dependencies and more. This application is used by executives and features dashboards to identify problem projects at a glance. At the end of my contract I applied for and received a full time position in the Platform Engineering department.

I was responsible for primary development and maintenance of the web features of Easynews.com, the world's premier Usenet provider. Implement, deploy and support Oracle 9iR2 and MySQL 4.1 databases. Developed multimedia (video) thumbnailing applications, PAR file support tools, and other key portions of Easynews.com

Develop web applications for order entry, billing, invoicing and inventory as front-ends for Oracle Applications 11. Responsible for extensive development of Intranet applications, including BOM front-ends and reports. Write reports and applications agains AR, PO, BOM, INV, WIP and OE.

Developed a replacement order entry interface for Oracle Apps 11 w/ a fully integrated custom rule-based configurator for complex order entry tasks. Order entry went from hours to seconds per order.Developed invoicing, bill of material, warehouse (pick/pull)/inventroy/order entry/accounts receivable/GL/etc applications to complement Oracle Applications modules. This improved warehouse efficiency and allowed expansion to multiple warehouses.Developed invoice printing and envelope stuffing applications, call center applications, customer web interfaces and provided internal application, desktop and unix support to the IT department. Extend Pride databases interfaces to external vendors via EDI and the web.

Northeast Micro is a value added reseller in northeastern Pennsylvania. During my time at NE Micro I developed software applications for network deployment, a single sign-on application for Windows NT 4.0 networks and I converted multiple customers from Novell/IPX to NT/TCP and cobol/dos applications to Windows. I was also involved in the design of a city-wide wireless MAN for the Wilkes-Barre area school district.
