My primary duty is as a program/product manager for a medium-sized engineering team that focuses on long-term, high complexity, strategic and R&D initiatives within the company. I also serve as a bridge between our engineering teams more broadly and our enablement, sales, AM, and other business groups, providing business and user perspective to the former and technical knowledge to the latter.As with the rest of my career my job at OneReach has simply been to try to be useful in whatever way is most needed at the moment. This has driven me down a very product-oriented and technical track, to the point where I'm now spending a great deal of time coding, designing complex new systems from the UX to the UIs, through to the the SDKs, APIs, underlying service architecture, and onto the developer experience of building our platform or building using our platform. I still do many generalist types of things but it has been gratifying to get to specialize so deeply in this role.

First Day is a small private equity and consulting company I use to hold and manage investments in small businesses, startups, and product ventures, as well as to provide shared management and operations support to its constituent companies. At its height this was a team of eight people with diverse talents, capable of managing tech-oriented products and businesses with lean approach and bootstrap attitude toward cash flow. It was fun to see this grow from my personal LLC into a full-fledged business, but it's currently back down to no employees as I try to sort our what's next.

Participated in the 2016 Health Program in Denver as a "ninja" supporting the prospective CEOs as they developed new health companies and innovations, and as a program lead supporting 10.10.10's marketing, general operations, and program delivery. Following the 2016 program, I stayed on in a volunteer capacity to help 10.10.10's managing director plan and execute expansion of the company's programs and fundraising pipeline.

Design for Experience (DfE) is a community organization of passionate experience design professionals, thought leaders, and academics devoted to maturing practices related to human-centered research, design, strategy, and engineering. Teaching and learning are at the heart of DfE’s mission and service to the UX community; through DfE’s programs and initiatives, we’re continuously adding to the base of freely available resources that help practitioners grow their skills and careers, and opening doors for new people entering the field.My role in DfE is tightly related to and intertwined with what I do for UX Magazine. While serving as the executive and operational principal, I also apply my domain expertise in devising, planning, and overseeing Design for Experience's initiatives to improve the quality of and opportunities in experience-related fields.

Didus is an exclusive partner with UX Magazine, and I serve as an advisor to help fuel their potential through my experience in the UX field and with small businesses. Through Didus, I’m able to get intensively hands-on in the user-centered employment market to further my broader work, as well as help companies structure and build successful user-centered practices.Didus is strategic consulting firm as well as a staffing, career development, and contingent workforce provider helping companies build competency and teams in the realms of user-centered research, design, technology, and strategy. My role in Didus is primarily to apply my domain expertise and connections to help further the strategic goals of Didus’ clients, as well as to directly advise, mentor, and support UX professionals in their career growth.

With a readership exceeding 1.3M annually, UX Magazine (uxmag.com) is the most authoritative and widely read resource in user experience (UX), experience design, experience strategy, and related realms of research, design, technology, and business.I got started with UX Magazine because of the strong unmet need for knowledge resources about how UX applies to important things such as technology initiatives, customer experience strategies, design thinking, product and project management, organizational culture and dynamics, etc. UX Magazine fosters discussion and shared learning within the community, and also creates an environment where people from all disciples within and outside of the UX field can cross paths and learn from each other.At the end of 2012, I stepped back from most of the day-to-day editorial operations of UX Magazine so I could focus on finding ways of leveraging the magazine’s reach, influence, connections, brand, and community to do interesting new things to improve the UX field and sustain the magazine. This has been a great natural progression from writing the book and helping build EffectiveUI before its acquisition. And, in turn, UX Magazine continues to be a great springboard and catalyst for my involvement in Design for Experience, Didus, House of Genius, and other ventures. And beyond all else, it’s afforded me the immense privilege of working with some of the strongest minds and talents in the UX field.

Dapperly is a web, mobile, and tablet product that addresses an interesting, unmet need in the realm of men's fashion. Because the product is still under development, that’s about all I can say about it for now. Though significant progress has been made and the company's startup phase has been funded, work had to be temporarily halted after some awful things occurred that forced a shift in priorities, but I hope to rekindle progress in Dapperly soon.

ECG actively managed a number of investments in technology products and services companies, real properties, as well as construction, business development, and marketing services. FMI is a high-end 3D, CGI, motion graphics, and interactive media design and development studio in downtown Denver, and is an actively managed investment of Experience Capital Group. My role in FMI was to help bring the experience I and other key people from EffectiveUI had gained to help FMI mature and grow to meet its many valuable opportunities.

Update: EffectiveUI was acquired by WPP in April, 2012.While my focus was primarily on building other companies under Experience Capital Group, I was still on-hand at EffectiveUI for support and in trying to identify and facilitate ways of driving value into the company and helping with miscellaneous accounting, tax, and legal issues. During this period I was also busy writing a book about EffectiveUI's unique approach to building superior user experience (UX) in software that a major publisher, O'Reilly, asked EffectiveUI to write. The book is giving me a terrific opportunity to investigate and get a deep understanding of all of the professional disciplines in EffectiveUI, and to examine how some leading-edge concepts in UX design and software development methodology are being applied in the company and in the broader industry.

Update: EffectiveUI was acquired by Ogilvy / WPP in April, 2012.I entered EffectiveUI as the Chief Operations Officer after Architekture.com was acquired, merged with EffectiveUI, and began growing very rapidly. When EffectiveUI was a small company and couldn't yet afford the many specialized, experienced professionals it now has, my job at times included marketing, sales, project management, product management, account management, IT, legal, and myriad other tasks. I also managed the gutting and refurbishment of the company's 12,000 sq ft office in Denver. Through my last year there, I was overseeing principally finance, HR, and operations until I essentially delegated myself out of a job in March of '08 in order to focus on other activities and investments of EffectiveUI and its partners.

Architekture.com started off as a 1-person Flash development and consulting company. I joined in 2003 to help the company's president with bookkeeping and taxes, but changed focus to support a large (for us) software project while still continuing to deal with the business' finance and operations. When the company grew to 7 people, I took on the VP of Operations role, overseeing all business operations, and also doing much of the project management and client relationship management work. Architekture.com was ultimately rolled up into EffectiveUI, and I continued in EffectiveUI in a similar role.
