In this role, I helped lead a team of three students using effective communication, and task and time management skills while supporting students through: the collection of forest overstory, substrate, tree regeneration, coarse wood and soil data by learning and applying protocols and methods adapted from the Adaptive Silviculture under Climate Change (ASCC) study; professional and personal growth and learning opportunities related to natural sciences, Indigenous history, and career expansion, and; health challenges related to physical, outdoor work and the COVID-19 pandemic, adjusting work schedules to accommodate vaccination appointments and other personal team member needs. This position gave me the opportunity to apply my knowledge of forest and wildlife ecology, data collection and management, climate change science, remote work, safe driving on forest roads, equipment use and maintenance – including hand-held and high-accuracy GPS devices, compasses, soil corers, vertexes and rangefinders, DBH tapes and calipers – and nature-human relations to collect high quality data to support and further the ASCC study while maintaining the integrity of the forest and ensuring team safety. I also supported on-going in-house tasks such as Emerald Ash Borer monitoring, heron rookery and owl nest monitoring, fire patrolling, road and forest access, and maintenance.Since the Petawawa Research Forest is publicly accessible, I was also responsible for ensuring public safety. This included following gate-locking protocols according to the FWI (fire weather index), military exercises, and other forest maintenance activities. It also included providing directions and insight to the public, reminding them of forest access hours, and provide warnings if wildlife had been observed nearby.

Executed pan-North American boreal vegetation database management tasks including: data standardization and integration using RStudio software, documentation of standardization process, formatting our scientific data paper, and organizing and hosting meetings with potential and confirmed data contributors. I regularly communicated with institutional, governmental, and independent data contributors about their data, answering questions and providing insight to the project goals and extent as necessary. In this position, I have demonstrated my in-depth understanding of scientific study designs, the interpretation of results, and of boreal understory vegetation. I have also worked to develop legal documentation such as Data Sharing Agreements between our data contributors and the University of Laval, and work respectfully within these articulated boundaries. I have effectively communicated in both English and in French for this position, expanding my grasp on technical vocabulary in my second language.
