* Proactively took the system from 80+ pods at peak to 20, which reduced system load by 75% by fixing MongoDb / Postgres queries, profiling the Node.js app, fixing CPU blocking issues, adding logging, and debugging existing code , and fixing n+1 GraphQL API fan outs.* Led the refactoring of the role-based permission system to a custom role base permissions based on entities in the system, actions on those entities, and ownership or assignment of those entities. * Ran training sessions, did conduct code reviews, and engaged in pair programming to mentor and develop engineers.* Leveraged GitHub Actions, replacing CircleCI, Docker, private NPM repositories, and private Docker registries to streamline CI processes, cutting build times in half, and improving code quality with linting and tests blocking PRs.* Worked with the DevOps team with the CD process using Helm and deploying things to Amazon’s Elastic Kubernetes Service. Including setting up pre-deployment tasks around running DB migrations and working closely with them on making adjustments to and setting up horizontal pod autoscaler.

* Worked on technical designs, MongoDB query performance, Node.js performance, and actively contributed to their onboarding and knowing your customer process.* Helped and participated in the discussion and work around setting up engineering team best practices and processes around the CI/CD pipeline.* Conducted code reviews, and engaged in pair programming to mentor and develop engineers.* Improved local development environments using Docker Compose, enhancing integration testing, and adjusted the CI/CD pipeline to help with deployment efficiency.

* Led a team on refactoring the user login and permissions system with technical designs, building a few Node.js microservices, making React.js application changes, and supporting more fine grained permissions and to support SSO login process.* Led the refactoring of the importing/exporting process, transforming it into an asynchronous system that supported bulk DB actions, improving data handling efficiency. This was key to another project we worked on around supporting companies purchasing bulk tickets for transit agencies.* Implemented improved local development processes using Docker, automated testing, and Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, and cypress based UI testing to improve build times and code quality.* Proactively identified and resolved system bottlenecks and production issues, ensuring optimal system performance.

* Led the team on refactoring the Node.js Identity service to support new SSO flows and switching from CoffeeScript to just functional JavaScript to help with maintainability with the current team.* Help out on the team working on the Node.js GraphGL service that made calls to older C# API’s and services but support some new mobile and web interfaces.* Worked on an Elixir service to help build an ETL process pipeline around Kafka messages and GenStage.* Built and optimized C# APIs to process application data, improving performance and reliability via profiling the code and DB queries.

* Developed a high-performance Node.js ad server, that replaced the existing Ruby on Rails service, reducing server instances from 90+ containers to fewer than 9 at peak times using the first version of AWS ECS .* Utilized AWS Lambdas and Firebase for data management and job processing.* Used Apache Cassandra to handle the amount of writes happening and to roll up data over time.* We also rewrote the ad server in Elixir that took it from 9 containers to not even failing at one at peak times, but we stopped working on it and went back to Node.js as Elixir was still too new, and the CEO was afraid it would be harder to find engineers to work on it.

* Took the product install and compile from a 8-hour job to a 30-minute job by building a new install system using dependency trees and threading using C# and Node.js.* Worked on the installer / update tool around their custom DLL loader and builder to support the Elite software.* Built and optimized C# desktop application, improving performance and reliability via profiling the code and SQL DB queries.

* Built a code generator that generated DB stored procedures and classes using the CSLA framework to make a data access layer. It helped us make big changes a few years in a row with tight deadlines.* Helped launch the health risk assessment program and Silver&Fit sites around tracking steps with step counter devices using ASP.net web apps and SQL Server.* Worked on ashcompanies.com site as well as the call center web management tool used in all the call centers at the time. It was all ASP.net web app and a windows form app back by SQL Server.* Moved the first version of Healthyroads.com website from ASP ad VB script to classic ASP.net web app which then got the World Wide Web Health Award Best E-Commerce Site nationally in 2003.* Did a bunch of optimizations in all the apps around SQL Server and performance to help scale to over 9 different states from just the one when I started.

* Worked with Aperture CAD software that delivers real-time view of data center assets. We added port and network monitoring using Perl, C, CGI, and DCOM.* Worked on the datacenter management tool all written in ASP with VB script and SQL Server. Learned a lot about complex SQL queries and performance tuning SQL here.

* Ended up being the main engineer on a product called ProjectSolve that was written in ASP VBScript and Visual Basic with DCOM using Microsoft SQL Server. The tool was used to help Level 3 track the US and the EU local loop fiber projects they were working on at the time.* Create a S3 like file storage tool used by ProjectSolve for storing reports and files. With folder structure and security ACLs. Where files were stored on multiple servers and tracked using SQL Server.* Spent months at Level 3 offices around the world working closely with their management team to make some tight deadlines and get the product done the way they wanted it. Think agile before it was a thing.

* Led an artillery radar team in the field for training exercises even when people on my team out ranked me.* Received two meritorious promotes making Corporal within my first 2 years in service.* Attended leadership training, cold weather training, artillery radar school, and additional Infantry MOS training.* Shoot expert in rifle and pistol, finished swim qualifications all the way through the 6 weeks Intermediate level and even had a few perfect PT scores which was a 3-mile run in under 18 minutes, 20 pull ups, and 100 crunches in 2 minutes. Only wish I was in as good of shape as I was then now.
