About Dr Jo Twist Obe (She/Her)

I am CEO of the BPI, the representative voice of UK record companies and labels. With a range of members large and small, we ensure we have the healthiest ecosystem for our members and their artists to thrive. Innovation and creativity is at the heart of what we do. We own and run The BRIT Awards, raising important funds for creative education and music therapy, The Mercury Prize, and we administer the Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS). Between 2012 and 2023 I was the CEO of UK Interactive Entertainment, the trade body for games and interactive entertainment businesses in the UK. Our mission was to make the UK the best place in the world to make, sell and play games. With a background in technology, education, media, journalism and youth culture, and a PhD in online communities, identity, social inclusion and young people, I have a range of experience in interactive entertainment, policy, and creative technologies.I sit on several boards and advisory groups including the UKRI AI Strategic Advisory Team and Creative PEC Board. I was Chair of the BAFTA Games Committee (2013-2022) and a BAFTA Trustee (2018-2022) and was Ambassador on the Mayor of London’s Cultural Leadership Board 2017-2024.I'm a Visiting Lecturer at the Dept of Computing, Goldsmith's University and VP for games accessibility charity SpecialEffect, Patron of the QUAD Derby, Patron of mental health and games charity Safe in Our World, a Wiggin Foundation Trustee, BRIT Trust Trustee and King's Appointed Trustee for Historic Royal Palaces.In 2016 I won the MCV Women in Games award for Outstanding Contribution and in 2019 I was named MCV Industry Hero and Devcom Hero for Leadership in the European games industry. I was one of the Evening Standard’s Progress 1000 Most Influential People in 2019 and entered the Computer Weekly Most Influential Women in UK Tech Hall of Fame in 2021. I was honoured to be awarded an OBE in 2016 for contribution to the Creative Industries.Previously, I was Channel 4’s Commissioning Editor for Education, commissioning Digital Emmy-winning Battlefront II (not the game); free to play browser and mobile games, including Sweatshop, Nomnation and International Racing Squirrels as well as groundbreaking social media projects. Earlier in my career, I was Multiplatform Commissioner for BBC Entertainment & Switch and BBC Three Multiplatform Channel Editor commissioning innovative digital formats. I was Technology Reporter for BBC News online during the births and rise of citizen journalism, blogging, Google, YouTube, Second Life, Facebook and next gen consoles.

    I led the trade body that represents the games and interactive entertainment industry which aims to support, grow and promote the sector to make the UK the best place in the world to make, sell and play games. We worked at a high government stakeholder and company level, working with businesses from start-ups and micro-studios to multinational developers, platform holders (across all platforms) and publishers. We represent the interests of games, esports, VR, AR developers in entertainment and beyond. We represented and promoted the interests of the interactive entertainment and games industry across creative and digital sectors, to Government, to the media and to the world. We funded the Next Gen Skills Campaign which lobbied the Government through a wide consortium of interested stakeholders to get computer science onto the GCSE curriculum and we continue to work to increase the number of girls taking computer science, and promote the STEAM not just STEM agenda. Ukie also runs the Video Games Ambassador volunteer scheme and the Digital Schoolhouse programme, as well as partnering with Film London on Games London and the London Games Festival.
