About Juan Plata

Juan Plata is a Paragon HALO ECLSS Chief Engineer at Paragon Space Development Corporation. He possess expertise in biomedical engineering, matlab, signal processing, r&d, physics and 6 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "It was a pleasure to work with Juan on several ECLSS projects at Bigelow Aerospace. Juan is an exceptional team leader and engineer. He would be a great asset to any team. During our time at Bigelow Aerospace Juan was always passionate about his work. He was great at making sure he and his team delivered high quality work within challenging timelines. That said, Juan was easy to work with and great person both at work and off-work. I would love the chance to work with Juan again at some point." and "Juan is a great asset to the people around him as well as to any company that he is employed by. I have had the privilege of sitting next to Juan for the last two years at Bigelow Aerospace. When I first arrived I found that he was already established as one of management’s key people. It didn't take long to see why. His intellect and drive to make projects successful, is remarkable. During my time at Bigelow I discussed many ideas with Juan, to fully vet them prior to testing, this ensured that the time and cost would bring value to the company. These brainstorming sessions resulted in better solutions and a clearer path to validate the solution or they established the need for alternative ideas. Juan was not working directly on my projects, but was happy to peer review and discuss the things I was working on. Juan is a team player. This could also be seen in his positive treatment of all people. Another thing Juan does that helps team cohesion is, he listens. During my 15 years of work I have come across many that interrupt because they think that they know what you are saying, or just don’t actually listen. On the other hand Juan allows you to fully explain your thoughts prior to adding his own. I have enjoyed working with Juan and hope that we will work together again in the future."

Juan Plata Work Experience Details
  • Paragon Space Development Corporation
    Chief Engineer
Paragon Space Development Corporation Sep 2023 - Present
    Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
I coordinate the information flow and review of technical content across a team of over 40 engineers, ensuring seamless communication and alignment. I lead the integrated product team leads and discipline leads through the closure of Critical Design Review (CDR) actions, including finalizing structural analysis and releasing flight drawings. Additionally, I manage the transition into manufacturing, overseeing subcontractors as they finalize testing and hardware inspection for approval. I also lead the Change Review Board and serve as the scope control technical authority for evaluating design changes. In this role, I am the technical lead for both the Failure Review Board (FRB) and the Manufacturing Review Board (MRB), driving key review processes and ensuring technical integrity.
  • Paragon Space Development Corporation
    Engineering Team Lead
Paragon Space Development Corporation May 2020 - Aug 2023
    Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
I led the design of a subsystem for the HALO module of NASA’s Gateway station, focusing on temperature control, humidity control, and trace contaminant removal. In this role, I coordinated with discipline leads to ensure that all aspects of the subsystem—including functionality, design, analysis, power command and control, and materials and processing requirements—were thoroughly addressed. As the Control Account Manager (CAM), I was responsible for estimating costs and resources to drive project success. Additionally, I successfully presented the subsystem status to Northrop Grumman and NASA customers during key reviews, including the System’s Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), and Critical Design Review (CDR).
  • Bigelow Aerospace
    Senior System Engineer
    Bigelow Aerospace Jan 2017 - Mar 2020
North Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
As part of NASA’s NextSTEP Phase 2 effort, developed proposals and statements of work to receive NASA funding for the evaluation of proprietary CO2 removal systems. Wrote test plans, procedures, and reports to document CO2 removal system performance to NASA. Presented findings to NASA subject matter experts during technical interchange meetings. In collaboration with NASA teams that included crew systems, human factor efforts, and 4 astronauts, supported development and testing of a ground analog of the B330 spacecraft. In particular, developed the hardware and procedures the astronauts required to simulate living in the B330 for 3 days. For NASA’s NextSTEP Phase 3, reviewed and edited documentation related to the feasibility of the B330 expandable habitat (Concept of Operations, Architecture Definition Document), and proposed analysis of risk mitigation associated with deep space radiation environment. Lead the effort to track the allocation of resources (Master Equipment List) and developed metrics to ensure the system would meet mass and power limits to ensure mission success.
  • Bigelow Aerospace
    Senior Engineer
    Bigelow Aerospace Apr 2016 - Mar 2020
North Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
Manage a team of engineers to design and test systems to control the environment in an expandable module to support a crew of 4. Systems included air revitalization systems (CO2 removal and trace contaminant control) as well as thermal control systems. Select proper of the shelf components (blowers, motors, valves, heaters) to ensure system performance will meet requirements. Design test plans and procedures using proper sensors (CO2, flow, humidity, etc.) and data acquisition methods to validate system performance. Create budgets and project timelines. Develop mathematical models to simulate station power, cooling, and life support systems including CO2 removal and trace contaminant control. Rapid prototyping of concepts using 3D printing and laser cutting techniques. Design brackets to support testing and flight mock-up systems. Program control software using Opto22 to support testing objectives.
  • Stanford University
    Ph.D. Candidate In Bioengineering
    Stanford University Sep 2009 - Mar 2016
Used real-time MR tools to improve assessment of high-intensity ultrasound interventional therapies. Designed MRI Pulse sequences using Heartvista’s Spinbench interface and used them for real-time scanner control using HeartVista’s RTHawk interface. Modified in house graphical user interfaces in C++ and javascript for custom experiments. Used MATLAB to simulate MRI pulse sequence signal intensities. Received training for small and large animal experiments, including tumor implantation and high intensity focused ultrasound treatments in mice and endoluminal high intensity ultrasound treatments for larger animals.
  • Bigelow Aerospace
    Eclss Engineer
    Bigelow Aerospace Dec 2008 - Aug 2009
Helped design and test feedback control systems for pressure and temperature within the inflatable module (MATLAB). Also used Solidworks to design ECLSS equipment for water recycling.
