While working under the supervision of the hospital manager and the technical supervisor, I effectively and accurately performed duties such as; restraining animals, knowing the normal vital signs for dogs and cats, preparing and administrating medications (IV, orally, and topical), radiology, laboratory work, pharmacy, patient recovery, preparing diseased animals for cremation or necropsy's, and other duties assigned. I work side by side with a team of technicians and veterinarians, therefore I have developed a good sense of team work as well as leadership. This experience has highly strengthened my ability to document medical procedures and professionally communicate with others. The WiscAMP STEM Scholars Program is designed to support scholars’ academic achievement, increase exposure to STEM activities, and strengthen connections with other STEM students on campus. The program exposed me to research and conference opportunities that helped me build my professional and soft skills, in preparation for graduate school and/or employment. As a mentor I participated in undergraduate research, presented my research at variety of STEM related conferences/events, met with a faculty mentor on a monthly basis, and met with any mentees assigned to me. This opportunity strengthened my leadership skills and gave me a high degree of accountability.

Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements. Institutions encourage participants to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.

This program is designed to provide disadvantaged students with activities that will enhance their preparation to veterinary school. The five-week intensive summer program will begin June 25, 2015 (with orientation) and end July 31, 2015. The program will accommodate up to ten students.Students will have the opportunity to obtain some veterinary experience through rotations at our Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Students are also provided resource materials for preparation of the GRE and study skills. Professionals will speak on opportunities within veterinary medicine and career opportunities. Students will be required to participate in labs and make presentations. All students are expected to complete the entire five weeks (Monday through Friday) and all components of the program. A minimum of six hours each day with four hours in the teaching hospital, and two hours a day for other program activities.

I was certified to perform animal husbandry on rats, mice, and pigeon populations. I also handled transgenic mice population. Gained experience using an autoclave machine to sterilized different materials. This opportunity highly strengthened by laboratory skills and gave me a high degree of integrity.

I have performed paid behavioral ecology research on gray tree frogs of Wisconsin. I have continued to progressed my research in the same laboratory for a total of three years. Initially I had minor duties as assistant to the PhD students and the professor. As my research skills grew I was able to perform an independent study through the McNair Scholar's Program. My study was based on the" handedness" trait of the Hyla versicolor frog species and whether or not it correlated with brain lateralization. This experience highly strengthened my ability to work in teams, as well as refined my scholarly writing and public speaking skills.

I held monthly meetings with my mentees, met with a variety of faculty, ran team meetings, and involved students with community service opportunities.
