I currently teach 5th and 6th grade math and science at a dual language school. Our students learn both English and Spanish. We pride ourselves in our friendly caring staff, and working with our students and families so that our elementary students leave knowing how to read, write, and speak in English and Spanish. My role is to teach all our 5th and 6th graders math and science in Spanish, as well as serve as the science content lead.

My fellowship consists of four main components: youth developer, academic coach, apprenticeship leader/supporter, and school partnership. As a youth developer I work with a group of 16 students by providing them homework help, and serve as a mentor and role model for those students, as I am also their school advisor. As an academic coach, I teach classes designed to help students increase their Math and English skills, and academic skills such as test taking, note taking, and working in groups. As the apprenticeship leader/supporter, I helped a local volunteer teach flag football to 17 students by teaching them not only how to play the sport but how to work as a team, as well as supported Robotics, Doctor, and Marketing Apprenticeships within my two years of the fellowship. I also taught my own apprenticeship, Survivor, which is a ten-week hands-on class about evolution and adaptation. As the school partnership, I work with the school as one of the family advocates to make sure our school families are engaged and informed of what is happening at our school, by planning and participating in family events, our back to school night/orientation and field trips for students and families. Lastly, I work with the school as one of our school’s recruiter, where I go local grade schools and other events to talk to students and families about our school.
