As Deputy Director of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies, I manage the Center’s operations, external relations, research, and student programs. I try to make sure that we are addressing the right questions through our research program, demonstrating a culture of research and administrative excellence, and making the right links externally for our research to drive insights and action.I combine skills, knowledge, and relationships to pursue the goals and objectives of an entrepreneurial unit embedded in a large bureaucracy. I use Airtable, Amazon, Asana, GSuite, and Wordpress on a VPS to meet the needs of a growing organization while minimizing our administrative burden.I also continue to research transportation finance and governance and mobility innovation with a focus on California.

As part of my role as Deputy Director of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies, I'm the Program Manager of the FHWA-funded Center of Excellence on New Mobility and Automated Vehicles.

I teach when I have free time and when there are gaps in the capacity of tenured faculty.In 2022, I taught a Comprehensive Project course on planning indicators for Los Angeles County as the capstone project for 18 Masters in Urban & Regional Planning students.I also designed and teach a graduate course on environmental assessment in urban planning that balances the regulatory-driven incremental approach of the California Environmental Quality Act with a comprehensive, systems-based approach to planning for and measuring progress toward community sustainability and resilience. (Winter 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019).In 2019, I facilitated a special topics course on innovative mobility.I taught a capstone course for graduating students in the BS Environmental Science program. I've led student teams who created a community-wide carbon neutral scoping plan for the City of Hermosa Beach (2013), a carbon-neutral electricity delivery plan for Hermosa Beach that spurred interest in Community Choice Aggregation (2014), and a long-range climate action plan for the City of Santa Monica that took an innovative approach to consider local emissions targets derived from the IPCC's global emissions budget (2015).
