About Juan W. Rivera
In the fall of 2016, I began my new career as a Library Media Specialist (aka school librarian) at A. Philip Randolph Campus High School in Harlem. Literacy, libraries, and writing have helped me to expand my life and travel the world. I know I have a lot more to learn. I am looking forward to serving and paying back all that libraries and literacy have given me. As an educator, I bring this passion for expanding literacy and critical thinking as a way to widen students' opportunities. I helped students and teaching staff move towards thesis-based writing and portfolio-based assessment. My passion is to expand everyone's vision of what they can learn and accomplish and become life-long learning.I am pleased to announce that I will be part of the America Library Association Emerging Leader cohort of 2018. I've also been chosen to be a member of the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries to help advise the New York State Education Department.
Listed skills include Teaching, Curriculum Development, Literacy, Lesson Planning, and 19 others.

Ala Emerging Leader 2018
Worked with a team of ALA Emerging Leaders to create a toolkit to help school librarians create and defend LGBTQ+ materials. "The ALA Emerging Leaders program is a leadership development offering that enables newer library workers to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into the structure of ALA, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It allows participants to be on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as serve in other professional library-related organizations."
