In a society where categorizing dominates, I want to take part in breaking the chain of oppression. As a Rutgers University Freshman, I view this as the first step to accomplishing this goal. My passion lies in establishing a clean break from isolating the voices of minority groups. This urge dates back to recognizing myself as a disabled Hispanic woman in the United States, a triple minority. Understanding this struggle is power so I will advocate for me and all those that will come after me. There is a multitude of challenges a person must face and conquer before realizing their goal. In spite of mines’, my desire to help those in need burns ever brighter. Throughout my high school career, I became aware of the social and political changes of the place I live in. By realizing this, I gained the courage to join the Sadie Nash Women’s Leadership Project, a space to empower and facilitate healing in young women of color. This trans-formative experience allowed me to actively advocate for my people in Puerto Rico. After Hurricane Maria, thousands of Puerto Ricans lost their lives and many more were displaced. For me this was the point of no return. I understood I could no longer sit back, watch what was occurring in PR, and do nothing. I initiated and go fund at school to assist those in the island that were in need. My platform spread through facilitating meetings and care packages with local restaurants to send back to Puerto Rico. Every donation and volunteer time received was worth it. All contributions brought us one step closer to ensuring the people were not alone in their fight. With my passionate and determination, I became a change maker. College is one more stepping stone in gaining the tools to serve underprivileged communities such as the citizens of Puerto Rican that were affected by Hurricane Maria. I am a change maker who is ready and willing to face any challenges that come her way and create opportunities along the way.
