Working at the Leaning Pine Arboretum involved an array of several landscaping responsibilities. This included using a variety of tools and equipment to prune plants, manage weeds, maintain trails, and clearing fallen debris.

As a summer intern with Performance Landscapes, a BrightView Landscapes branch located on Oahu, I received valuable experience in a wide variety of fields. I was tasked with hands-on, laborious work such as basic landscape maintenance and installation. I was also assigned more technical responsibilities, like bidding for jobs, landscape irrigation, and tree trimming and removal. This internship provided me with several skills that I believe will be monumentally beneficial throughout the progression of my career.

San Luis Obispo County, California, United States

During this role, I was responsible for working with a partner to monitor the spread of a pathogen called sudden oak death (Phytophthora ramorum) throughout San Luis Obispo County. We worked under the leadership and guidance of Kim Corella, a lead pathologist of Cal Fire. Our work involved contacting landowners, plotting GIS points, helicopter surveillance and photography, and off-trail hiking to potentially-infected trees. If a tree was exhibiting symptoms, my partner and I would collect a sample from the tree to be shipped to UC Davis for testing. We kept track of everything we did carefully across multiple Excel spreadsheets in addition to ArcGIS.

Nikiski, Alaska

This position involved a plethora of responsibilities. Each day we fished, we would set nets, haul equipment, pick fish from nets, and work collaboratively as a team. We practiced sustainable fishing and caught very little bycatch. The work was carefully coordinated, physically demanding, and often included 12-18 hour work days.
