About Judge Karen Braxton

Judge Karen Braxton serves as the Judge of the Wayne County Third Circuit Court. Judge Braxton aspires to help the youth and families in Wayne County with fairness, compassion, and respect. She is committed to continuing exceptional service to Wayne County on and off the bench. She began her service in January 2013, and currently presides over juvenile delinquency, abuse and neglect cases, juvenile guardianships, and child custody matters. She also adjudicates a specialty docket for youths that are truant from school and is the Presiding Judge for the Supervised Treatment for Alcohol & Narcotic Dependency (S.T.A.N.D.) Program, a juvenile drug treatment court program for youth that are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs. In addition to hearing hundreds of cases per year in the busiest court in the state, she serves on various boards, including serving as a Board Member and Secretary of We Care, Foster Care (formerly known as For the Seventh Generation) and an Advisory Board Member for Hope 4 America. Judge Braxton is also a member of the National Association of Counsel for Children and is certified as a Child Welfare Law Specialist, a professional achievement that signifies an attorney's specialized knowledge, skill, and verified expertise in the field of child welfare law. Judge Braxton obtained her undergraduate degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Rochester in 2000. She received her Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2003. Judge Braxton was admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan in November 2003 and immediately began her legal career as a solo practitioner. Outside of her career, Judge Braxton speaks throughout the metro area, delivering presentations that address the many issues that our youth are facing and to provide pertinent information to the community regarding foster care, adoption and a host of other topics that involve youths and their families. Additionally, Judge Braxton is a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
